Making enquiries at a driving school to learn to drive
The task

You have just arrived in your city in Canada and would like to get your driving licence. You walk into a driving school to find out more. The examiner plays the role of an employee of the driving school who welcomes you. You play the role of a person who wants to learn to drive. You ask the employee questions to get as much useful information as possible before enrolling: prices, length of the training, documents to provide, how the lessons work, etc. Ask a variety of questions, react to each of the employee's answers and keep the conversation going naturally until the examiner brings it to an end.

How to structure your answer
Open politely: greet the employee, introduce yourself briefly and explain your project (getting your licence, your situation as a newcomer to Canada). For example: "Je viens d'emménager à Montréal et je voudrais apprendre à conduire."
Start with a broad question about the training (content, theory and practical lessons, total length), then pick up on the answer instead of moving straight on to the next question.
Move on to money: the price of the full package, the cost of an extra hour, exam fees, and whether you can pay in instalments.
Ask about practical matters: documents to bring, schedules and availability, type of car (manual or automatic), waiting time before the exam.
Close the conversation: summarise the key information, say what you will do next (think it over, come back with your documents, enrol) and thank the employee.
Throughout, keep to polite forms (vous, "Pourriez-vous me préciser…") and react to every answer ("D'accord, et dans ce cas…", "C'est avantageux") so the exchange sounds natural and not like a list of questions.
Model answer
Pourriez-vous me renseigner ? Examinateur : Bonjour, bien sûr. Asseyez-vous, je vous écoute. Candidat : Merci.

Candidate: Hello, sir, sorry to bother you. I have just moved to Montréal and I would like to learn to drive. Could you give me some information? Examiner: Hello, of course. Have a seat, I'm listening. Candidate: Thank you. To begin with, what exactly does your training involve? Examiner: There are theory classes in a classroom and driving lessons with an instructor. Candidate: Okay. And how long does the whole training last? Examiner: Allow about three months, with two sessions a week. Candidate: Three months, that's reasonable. Do the theory classes take place in the evening? I work during the day. Examiner: Yes, we have evening groups and Saturday morning groups. Candidate: Perfect, Saturday would suit me very well. Now, let's talk about the budget: what is the price of the full package? Examiner: It costs 1,100 dollars, with twenty hours of driving. Candidate: And if I need extra lessons, how much does an additional hour cost? Examiner: Fifty-five dollars an hour. Candidate: I see. Is it possible to pay in instalments? Examiner: Yes, in three payments, with no fees. Candidate: That's a good deal, thank you. Are the exam fees included in the package? Examiner: No, they have to be paid separately to the official body. Candidate: Very well, I'll make a note of that. What documents do I need to bring you to enrol? Examiner: A piece of ID, proof of address and a photo. Candidate: I have my passport and my lease. Can my permanent resident card replace the piece of ID? Examiner: Yes, that's perfectly fine. Candidate: Excellent. One last question about the cars: are the lessons done with a manual or an automatic gearbox? Examiner: Both are possible, but most students choose automatic. Candidate: Then I will choose automatic, it will be simpler. To sum up, the training lasts three months, costs 1,100 dollars and I have to bring three documents. Can we start next month? Examiner: Yes, a new group starts in three weeks. Candidate: Great. I'll come back tomorrow with my documents to finalise my enrolment. Thank you very much for your help and your patience. Examiner: My pleasure, see you tomorrow.

Common mistakes
The correct expression is "permis de conduire" (the verb stays in the infinitive). "Permis de conduite" and "permis de conduit" are wrong.
WrongJe voudrais obtenir mon permis de conduite.
RightJe voudrais obtenir mon permis de conduire.
Do not build questions on the pattern "X, c'est combien ?" or "La durée est combien ?". Use a proper question: "Combien coûte… ?" or "Quelle est la durée de… ?".
WrongLa durée est combien ?
RightQuelle est la durée de la formation ?
Too familiar a register with a professional. Use vous and polite formulas such as "Pourriez-vous me préciser…" rather than "tu" or "ça coûte combien ?".
WrongTu peux me dire ça coûte combien ?
RightPourriez-vous me préciser le prix du forfait ?
Do not mix up "passer un examen" (to take it) and "réussir un examen" (to pass it). Also avoid saying "passer le permis" without saying which test you mean.
WrongJ'ai passé l'examen, donc j'ai mon permis.
RightJ'ai réussi l'examen, donc j'ai mon permis.
Watch the prepositions: "assister à" and "s'inscrire à" take "à".
After "il faut que" and "je voudrais que" you need the subjunctive.
Do not just string closed questions together and answer with "oui" or "merci". React to what you hear and build on it ("D'accord, et dans ce cas…") so the conversation feels natural.
"Frais" is always plural ("les frais"; "le frais" is wrong), and it is not a synonym of "prix" or "tarif". Avoid the vague "les documents nécessaires à apporter"; it is clearer to use a real verb.
WrongQuels sont les documents nécessaires à apporter ?
RightQuels documents dois-je fournir ?
The grammar this task needs
Polite question forms: inversion, « est-ce que » and the conditional
The whole task is a series of questions to a professional. You must ask correctly and politely, and vary the forms so you don't sound like a list. A structure like « Le prix, c'est combien ? » would lose points for register and accuracy.
Prepositions with verbs of enrolment and attendance
You will talk about signing up, attending classes and paying. Prepositions are a classic source of errors in these verbs (note: « assister à », « s'inscrire à »). Exception to keep in mind: « payer » takes a direct object for the thing paid (« payer les frais »), but « payer pour » is possible for the person or service in other contexts.
The subjunctive after « il faut que » and « je voudrais que » (and the alternative with the conditional)
You will ask what you must bring or do. The subjunctive is correct but risky. If you are not sure of the form, switch to a safe formulation with « pouvoir » or « devoir ».
Conditional of politeness and the future for your plans
The conditional softens your requests, and the simple future lets you conclude by saying what you will do. This gives the conversation the polite and natural tone that examiners reward.

What the examiner looks for
In this interaction task the examiner looks for a natural, well-led conversation: you ask varied and correctly formed questions, you react to each answer instead of just moving on, and you cover several themes (price, duration, documents, practical details). A polite, consistent register (vous, conditional) is essential. Accurate grammar in questions and prepositions, together with precise vocabulary (forfait, versements, pièce d'identité, boîte automatique), distinguishes a B2 or C1 level from a B1. Finally, a clear opening and a conclusion that summarises the information and states your next step show control of the whole exchange.
