Translation of the prompt

Roles: the examiner plays an employee of a vehicle rental agency, sitting behind his counter. You are a customer who has not booked anything yet. Situation: you plan to go on holiday in Canada with your family and you need a car for about ten days. You walk into the agency to get information. Task: start a conversation with the employee and ask him questions to compare the available options. Find out in particular about prices, the categories of vehicles available, insurance, rental conditions (age, licence, deposit, mileage, fuel) and the return arrangements. React to his answers. Duration: 2 minutes of preparation, then 3 minutes 30 of conversation.

How to structure your answer

  1. Open politely: greet the employee, explain your plan (family holiday, about ten days, approximate place and dates) and ask what offers are available, e.g. « Pourriez-vous m'indiquer quelles sont vos offres ? »

  2. Ask about vehicles and prices: categories (sedan, SUV, minivan), daily or weekly rate, included mileage, taxes and hidden fees.

  3. Ask about insurance and conditions: collision coverage, occupant protection, deductible, deposit, whether a foreign licence is accepted, additional driver.

  4. Find out about the practical side: pick-up and return, fuel policy, cancellation or changes to the booking, opening hours of the agency.

  5. React to every answer (rephrase, compare, negotiate a discount), then conclude by summing up the offer you have chosen and thanking the employee, e.g. « Pour résumer... » and « Merci beaucoup pour votre aide. »

Candidat : Je comptais faire un circuit assez long.

Candidate: Good morning, sir, I would like to rent a car for my holidays. Could you tell me what offers you currently have? Examiner: Good morning. Yes, of course. For which dates and for how many people? Candidate: There would be four of us, two adults and two children, from the 12th to the 22nd of July. What types of vehicles do you have available? Examiner: We have sedans, SUVs and minivans. Candidate: With two children and four suitcases, an SUV seems more suitable to me. What is the daily rate? Examiner: Count on about ninety dollars a day. Candidate: All right. Is the mileage unlimited, or is there a limit per day? Examiner: It is limited to two hundred kilometres per day. Candidate: I was planning a fairly long trip. What is the surcharge beyond this limit? Examiner: It is twenty-five cents per additional kilometre. Candidate: Very well. And are taxes included in the price you gave me? Examiner: No, they are added at the time of payment. Candidate: I see. Let's move on to insurance: what is included in the base rate? Examiner: Only third-party liability insurance is included. Candidate: And if I want more complete cover against collisions and theft, how much would that cost, and what would the deductible be? Examiner: Fifteen dollars a day, with a deductible of five hundred dollars. Candidate: All right. I have just arrived in Canada and my licence was issued in my country. Is it accepted, or do I need an international licence? Examiner: It is accepted if it is written in French or English, together with a piece of identification. Candidate: Perfect. Is there a deposit to pay, and on which card? Examiner: Yes, a deposit of three hundred dollars, on a credit card in the driver's name. Candidate: Will my wife be able to drive too? Are there fees for a second driver? Examiner: Yes, ten dollars a day. Candidate: Understood. How does fuel work: do I have to return the car with a full tank? Examiner: Yes, with the tank full, otherwise we charge for the missing fuel. Candidate: And if I have to return the vehicle in another city, is that possible? Examiner: Yes, subject to a drop-off fee. Candidate: If my plans change, can I cancel or change my booking free of charge? Examiner: Free of charge up to forty-eight hours before departure. Candidate: Excellent. If I book today for ten days, could you give me a discount? Examiner: I can offer you ten percent off. Candidate: That is very kind. To sum up: an SUV for ten days with a ten percent discount, full insurance and a second driver. I will book right now. Thank you very much for your help. Examiner: My pleasure, I will prepare the contract.

Common mistakes

  • Using « Je veux » instead of « Je voudrais » or « J'aimerais »: the tone becomes too blunt with an employee. Use the conditional to be polite.

    WrongJe veux louer une voiture.

    RightJe voudrais louer une voiture.

  • Addressing the examiner with « tu », or switching from « vous » to « tu » during the exchange. Keep « vous » throughout.

WrongTu peux me donner le prix ?

RightPourriez-vous me donner le prix ?

  • Asking a series of closed questions without reacting to the answers. You should rephrase, compare or ask for more detail, as the task says: « Rebondissez sur ses réponses ».

  • Confusing « assurance » with « assurance tous risques », or ignoring the notion of deductible (« franchise »), which is essential in a car rental.

  • Using a word-for-word structure like « how much is the rental? ». In French, ask about the price with a proper question.

WrongLa location de voiture est combien ?

RightQuel est le tarif ? / Combien coûte la location ?

  • Misusing inversion and repeating the same heavy patterns over and over, instead of varying your formulations (« Pourriez-vous me préciser... », « Est-il possible de... »).

  • Mixing up the meanings of « louer » (to rent as a customer, or to rent out as the owner) or inventing a verb such as « locationner ». The correct verb is « louer ».

    WrongJe veux locationner une voiture.

    RightJe voudrais louer une voiture.

  • Staying silent at the conclusion: forgetting to sum up the chosen offer and to say thank you.

The grammar this task needs

Polite requests with the conditional (je voudrais, j'aimerais, pourriez-vous, serait-ce possible)

You are speaking to a service employee you do not know. The conditional keeps your tone courteous and is one of the first things an examiner notices. 'Je veux' sounds too blunt.

The task is to obtain information, so you will ask a dozen or more questions. If you repeat 'Est-ce que... ?' every time, your range looks poor. Mixing inversion, 'est-ce que' and indirect questions shows control of the language. Note that inversion is natural in formal questions but is not compulsory: 'est-ce que' remains correct in speech.

Conditional and future for hypotheses (si + présent, futur/conditionnel)

You must ask about situations that have not happened yet: a change of plans, a late return, an accident. With 'si' you use the present in the 'si' clause and the future (or present/imperative) in the main clause. The conditional in the main clause comes after 'si' + imparfait, for a more hypothetical case.

The employee will give you amounts, limits and percentages. You must understand them and repeat them to check, using the right prepositions and expressions.

Ideas bank

PositionArgumentExample
VehiclesChoose the vehicle category according to your family and luggage, and justify it.With two children and four suitcases, an SUV (VUS) is more suitable than a sedan; you could also ask whether a minivan has more room.
PriceCompare the daily and weekly rates, and ask what is not included.Ask whether ten days cost less per day than a weekly rate plus three days, and whether taxes and airport fees are added at payment.
MileageLink the mileage to your itinerary to show you have a real project. If you plan a long circuit, ask whether mileage is unlimited and how much each extra kilometre costs.
InsuranceAsk exactly what the base price covers and what the extra coverage costs.Ask for the price of collision and theft cover and the amount of the deductible (la franchise); check whether your credit card already offers cover.
ConditionsAs a foreign visitor, check the driver's requirements.Ask whether your licence issued abroad is accepted, whether you need an international permit, and what the minimum age is.
DepositAsk about the amount and the method of payment of the deposit.Ask whether the deposit must be on a credit card in the driver's name and when the money is released after the return.
DriversPlan for several drivers on a long trip.Ask whether your spouse can drive too and what the extra driver costs per day.
Fuel and returnUnderstand the fuel policy and the return procedure.Ask whether you must return the car with a full tank, what happens otherwise, and whether you can return it in another city (drop-off fee).
FlexibilityAsk about cancellation and changes, since plans can change.Ask whether cancellation is free up to 48 hours before departure and whether you can extend the rental.
NuanceDo not accept the first offer: compare and negotiate politely.Say that another agency is cheaper, or that you are booking ten days today, and ask for a discount (un rabais).
PracticalAsk about opening hours and the pick-up place.Ask whether the agency is open early on the day of departure and whether the car can be picked up at the airport.

What the examiner looks for

The examiner is looking for a client who takes the initiative and obtains many different pieces of information: price, vehicle, insurance, conditions, return. Each question should react to the previous answer (rephrase, compare, ask for a detail) rather than follow a fixed list. Register must stay polite and consistent throughout, with 'vous' and conditionals, and question forms should vary. Fluent speech, clear pronunciation of numbers and amounts, and a precise vocabulary (franchise, caution, kilométrage, frais d'abandon) separate B2 from C1. Finish with a short summary of your choice and a thank-you, without staying silent.
