Asking for Information at the Front Desk of the New Cultural Centre

The task

2 min preparation + 3 min 30

Translation of the prompt

You have just learned that the cultural centre in your town has recently opened its doors. You are interested and go to the reception desk to find out more. I play the role of the employee in charge of reception; you are a visitor who wishes to obtain information. Ask me questions about what the centre offers: opening hours, prices, activities, registration procedures, etc. You have 2 minutes to prepare the conversation, which will then last 3 minutes 30 seconds.

How to structure your answer

  1. Open the conversation politely: greet the employee, introduce yourself briefly and state the purpose of your visit, e.g. « J'ai appris que le centre culturel venait d'ouvrir et j'aimerais me renseigner ».

  2. Ask about the activities on offer (workshops, classes, shows, library, exhibitions) and ask which ones would suit you or your family.

  3. Move on to practical matters: opening days and hours, prices, annual membership, discounts (students, newcomers, families), and how to register and pay.

  4. React to every answer: rephrase it, ask for a detail or compare two options (« Et pour... ? », « Est-ce qu'il existe aussi... ? »). This shows you can interact and keep the conversation going, which is what the examiner is assessing.

  5. Close the exchange: sum up what you have understood, ask for a brochure or the website, thank the employee and take your leave politely.

Candidat : Le soir me conviendrait bien. Candidat : Cela me paraît avantageux.

Candidate: Hello, ma'am, sorry to disturb you. I heard that the cultural centre has just opened and I would like to find out about what you offer. Examiner: Hello! With pleasure. We offer workshops, exhibitions and shows. Candidate: Very good. What types of workshops do you have exactly? I'm thinking mainly of music and painting. At what times during the week do these classes take place? I work during the day. Examiner: There are sessions in the evening from 6 p.m. and on Saturday morning. Candidate: The evening would suit me well. And how much does a painting class cost, for example? Examiner: It's 180 dollars for a ten-week session. Candidate: All right. Is there a reduced rate for students or for newcomers? I have only recently settled in Canada. Examiner: Yes, we offer 20% off to newcomers, upon presentation of supporting documentation. Candidate: That's very interesting, thank you. Which documents do I need to bring to benefit from it? Examiner: Your permanent resident card and proof of address are enough. Candidate: Understood. And to register, do I have to go through the website or can I do it here, on site? Examiner: Both are possible. You can fill in the form at the counter today. Candidate: Perfect. I also wanted to know whether the centre has a library or an exhibition room open to the public. Examiner: Yes, both are accessible free of charge, from Tuesday to Sunday. Candidate: Excellent. What time does it close on weekends? Examiner: At 5 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Candidate: Thank you very much. Is there also an annual membership that would give access to several activities? Examiner: Yes, it costs 120 dollars per year and entitles you to discounted show tickets. Candidate: That seems advantageous to me. Could I have a brochure with the programme and the prices? Examiner: Of course, here it is. Candidate: Thank you. To sum up, the painting classes take place in the evening, cost 180 dollars with 20% off for me, and I can register starting today. I'm going to think about it and I'll come back soon. Common mistakes

  • Using « tu » with the employee. This is a formal situation, so you must use « vous ».

  • Firing off questions with intonation alone, as a list of single words. Use complete sentences with « Pourriez-vous me dire... » or « Est-ce que... ».

WrongLes prix ?

  • « Savoir » does not normally take a noun like « les horaires » directly. Use « connaître » with a noun, or « savoir » followed by a full clause such as « quels sont... ».

    WrongJe voudrais savoir les horaires.

RightJe voudrais connaître les horaires. / Je voudrais savoir quels sont les horaires.

  • Confusing « inscrire » and « s'inscrire ». When you register yourself, the verb is pronominal and takes « à »: « s'inscrire à un cours ».

WrongJe voudrais inscrire à un cours.

RightJe voudrais m'inscrire à un cours.

  • Using the casual spoken form « combien ça coûte les cours ? » in a formal setting. Prefer inversion or a more formal wording.

WrongCombien ça coûte, les cours ?

RightCombien coûtent les cours ? / Quel est le tarif des cours ?

  • Moving from question to question without reacting to the answer. The examiner often replies briefly, so you need to rephrase or ask for more detail to show real interaction.

  • Repeating yourself needlessly. « À partir de » already marks the start, so do not add « jusqu'à » in the same breath, and « du matin » is redundant after a time that is obviously morning.

  • Ending without a proper conclusion. Do not forget to thank the employee, sum up what you learned and ask for a brochure.

The grammar this task needs

This is a formal exchange with a staff member, so you must ask complete, polite questions. Simple rising intonation or a string of one-word questions will lower your score for register and correctness. Note that inversion is not compulsory: « est-ce que » is perfectly acceptable, and inversion is mainly worth using with short, common verbs.

Pronominal verb « s'inscrire à » and the choice between « savoir » and « connaître »

Registration is central to this task, and two classic errors come up here: using « inscrire » without the reflexive pronoun, and saying « savoir les horaires ».

Conditional of politeness and the future to express a decision

The conditional softens requests (« j'aimerais », « pourrais-je »), and the near future or future lets you conclude clearly (« je vais y réfléchir », « je reviendrai »). Together they give the exchange a courteous, controlled tone.

Opening hours, session lengths and fees are the core information in this scenario. Using prepositions accurately shows precision. Avoid redundancy such as « à partir de… jusqu'à… » or « 8 h du matin ».

What the examiner looks for

The examiner is looking for a real, lively exchange: you must obtain information through a variety of correct, polite questions, not simply read through a list. They will check that you use formal address (vouvoiement) consistently, that you react to each answer (rephrase, ask for clarification, compare), and that you cover several areas: activities, hours, prices, discounts and registration. A clear opening and a conclusion with a summary and thanks show you can structure an interaction. Range of vocabulary (tarif réduit, session, rabais, modalités d'inscription) and accurate question forms are what move you from B2 towards C1.
