Enrolling in a course at a music school

The task

2 min preparation + 3 min 30

Translation of the prompt

You would like to sign up for music lessons and you go to the music school in your neighbourhood. You speak to the person at the front desk to get information before making your choice. Examiner's role: he or she plays the receptionist at the music school. He or she answers your questions briefly. Candidate's role: you are a person who wants to enrol in a course. You ask questions to get all the useful information: types of lessons, schedules, fees, registration procedures, etc. You have 2 minutes to prepare. The exchange lasts 3 minutes 30 seconds. It is up to you to lead the conversation.

How to structure your answer

  1. Open politely: greet the receptionist, say you would like to enrol, and ask what courses are offered (instruments, individual or group lessons, levels). Useful phrase: « J'aimerais d'abord avoir quelques renseignements. »

  2. Explain your project (instrument, level, goal), then ask about schedules and lesson length, mentioning your work constraints. For example: « Je travaille la journée, donc je serais plutôt disponible en soirée. »

  3. Ask about fees: price per term or per year, payment in instalments, renting or buying the instrument, any discount. For example: « Est-il possible de payer en deux versements ? »

  4. Find out the practical details: documents to provide, registration deadline, trial lesson, cancellation or make-up policy. For example: « Quels documents dois-je fournir ? »

  5. Close the conversation: summarise the key information, thank the employee and say what you will do next (come back with the form, register online). For example: « Pour résumer, je viendrais au cours du mardi… »

  6. Throughout, lead the conversation: react to each answer (« D'accord, et dans ce cas… ») rather than just firing off questions, and keep to the formal « vous » until the end.

Common mistakes

  • Questions without inversion or a clear structure sound too casual. At B2 aim for more polished spoken forms such as inversion or « est-ce que ».

WrongVous avez quoi comme cours ?

    RightQuels cours proposez-vous ?

  • Do not confuse « renseigner » (to inform; se renseigner = to find out) with « enseigner » (to teach). Also, saying you want information bluntly is too direct; use a polite formula.

    WrongJe veux des informations.

    RightJ'aimerais savoir… / Pourriez-vous m'indiquer… ?

  • Using « tu » or a very familiar register with the employee is inappropriate. Keep « vous » throughout the exchange.

WrongTu peux me dire les horaires ?

RightPourriez-vous me dire les horaires ?

  • Wrong prepositions with price words. Prefer « le tarif d'un cours » or « le prix de la session ».

    Wrongle prix de cours

Rightle tarif d'un cours / le prix de la session

  • Sticking to closed yes/no questions and moving straight on without reacting makes the exchange stiff. Respond to each answer to keep the conversation alive.

    RightD'accord, et dans ce cas…

  • Do not wait for the examiner to speak. You must take the initiative and cover every point: courses, schedules, fees, registration.

  • Mixing up time prepositions. Say « le samedi », « le mardi à 18 h 30 », « en soirée ». Remember that « à le » is never correct in French.

Wrongà le samedi / en soirée de mardi

    Rightle samedi / le mardi à 18 h 30 / en soirée

  • Do not confuse « cours » (lesson) with « court » (short). Also pay attention to articles: « payer les frais » (specific, known fees) versus « payer des frais » (fees in general); choose the definite or partitive/indefinite article according to context.

    Wrongun court de guitare

    Rightun cours de guitare

The grammar this task needs

Question formation with inversion and polite forms (est-ce que, inversion, conditional)

The whole task is about obtaining information, so you will ask a dozen questions. At B2 level the examiner expects varied, polished forms rather than the same 'Vous avez quoi ?' pattern. Politeness with an employee also calls for the conditional.

  • Quels cours proposez-vous aux adultes débutants ?
  • Combien de séances y a-t-il par session ?
  • Faut-il avoir sa propre guitare ?
  • Pourriez-vous m'indiquer les tarifs ?
  • Est-ce que je pourrais faire un cours d'essai ?

The conditional of politeness (je voudrais, j'aimerais, pourriez-vous, je serais)

Asking for information from a stranger requires a courteous tone. The conditional softens requests and states your wishes and constraints without sounding abrupt. Note that the imperative or 'je veux' sounds too direct.

  • Je voudrais m'inscrire à un cours de musique.
  • J'aimerais savoir quels sont les horaires.
  • Je serais plutôt disponible en soirée.
  • Pourriez-vous me dire jusqu'à quand je peux m'inscrire ?

Time prepositions and days of the week (le mardi, à 18 h 30, en soirée, pendant douze semaines)

Schedules, durations and deadlines are central to this topic. Learners often add a wrong preposition before days. Without an article, 'mardi' means one specific day; with 'le', it means every Tuesday.

  • Il y a un cours le mardi à 18 h 30.
  • Je suis libre en soirée ou le samedi.
  • Le cours dure une heure par semaine, pendant douze semaines.
  • Les inscriptions ferment le 15 septembre.

Reformulation and summary (futur proche, conditional, 'pour résumer')

The plan asks you to end by recapping the key information and stating your next steps. This needs the near future for your plans and the conditional for the option you are considering.

  • Pour résumer, je viendrais au cours du mardi à 18 h 30.
  • Je vais remplir le formulaire et revenir avant le 15 septembre.
  • Si j'ai bien compris, la première séance est gratuite.

What the examiner looks for

The examiner is looking for a candidate who leads the conversation: you must open, ask questions on every point (courses, schedules, prices, registration) and keep the exchange going for the full 3 minutes 30 without waiting for prompts. Questions should be varied and correctly formed (inversion, est-ce que, conditional), with consistent use of vous. React to each answer ('D'accord, et dans ce cas…') rather than reading out a list of unrelated questions. A clear conclusion that recaps the information and states your next steps shows you can structure an interaction. At B2-C1, richness of vocabulary (versements, préavis, rattraper, rabais) and accuracy of prepositions matter more than speed.
