How to structure your answer
Make polite contact: greet your neighbour, introduce yourself briefly (new arrival, floor or apartment number) and explain why you are asking questions, e.g. « Excusez-moi de vous déranger » and « J'aimerais vous poser quelques questions ».
Ask about shops: where to do your grocery shopping (grocery store, pharmacy, market), opening hours, prices, and whether any shop sells products from your home country.
Move on to cultural outings: ask about the library, cinema, museums, festivals and free events, then ask how to get there by public transport. Use a link such as « Passons aux loisirs ».
Ask about sports: the sports centre, pool, parks and cycle paths, plus fees and registration, including what people do in winter.
Close the conversation: ask for a personal recommendation (your neighbour's favourite spot), thank them warmly and suggest meeting again. Throughout, use open questions, say « vous », and react to each answer before moving on, so that you fill the full 3 minutes 30.

Candidate: Hello, sorry to bother you. My name is Karim, I've just moved in on the third floor. Examiner: Hello Karim, nice to meet you! Welcome to the building. Candidate: Thank you very much. As I don't know the neighbourhood yet, I'd like to ask you a few questions, if you have a moment. Examiner: Yes, of course, go ahead. Candidate: To begin with, where do you usually do your grocery shopping? Examiner: There's a big supermarket ten minutes away on foot, on the main street. Candidate: Very good. And what time does it close in the evening? Examiner: Around ten p.m., every day. Candidate: That's convenient. Is there also a grocery store that sells North African products, or a market? Examiner: Yes, there's a small market on Saturday mornings near the metro, and a Maghrebi grocery store on the corner of the street. Candidate: Perfect, I'll go this weekend. Do you know a pharmacy that's open late? Examiner: The one across from the metro closes at midnight. Candidate: Thank you. Let's move on to leisure: is there a library or a cultural centre nearby? Examiner: Yes, the municipal library is five minutes away, and registration is free for residents. Candidate: That's excellent news. Do they organise activities there, for example workshops or evening events? Examiner: Yes, there are conversation workshops and film screenings every month. Candidate: And for the cinema or shows, where would you recommend I go? Examiner: There's a cinema downtown, and in summer, lots of free festivals in the park. Candidate: How can one get there without a car? Examiner: By metro, it's direct, about fifteen minutes. Candidate: Very good. Now, as for sport, is there a sports centre near here? Examiner: Yes, a community centre with a swimming pool and a weight room. Candidate: What are the fees, and do you have to register in advance? Examiner: The membership costs about thirty dollars a month, and you register directly at the front desk. Candidate: OK. And to exercise outdoors, is there a park or a cycle path? Examiner: Yes, a big park next door, with a track for running and cycling. Candidate: And in winter, what activities do people do? Examiner: Many people go ice skating on the park's rink or cross-country skiing. Candidate: I've never tried it, it really appeals to me! To finish, what is your favourite place in the neighbourhood? Examiner: Without hesitation, the café near the park, it's very pleasant. Candidate: I'll discover it tomorrow. Thank you so much for all this information, it was very useful. Examiner: My pleasure, don't hesitate if you have any other questions. Candidate: Thank you, see you very soon in the building!

Common mistakes
Closed questions only get a "yes" or "no" and give you little information. Prefer open questions starting with where, how or which.
WrongIl y a une piscine ?
RightOù se trouve la piscine ? / Quels sont les tarifs ?
Do not use the informal « tu » with the examiner. The situation requires « vous » (formal address) throughout.
WrongTu connais une pharmacie ouverte tard ?
RightVous connaissez une pharmacie ouverte tard ?
Watch the vocabulary of information. « Renseignement » is usually used in the plural (« des renseignements ») when you ask for information. « Information » is singular (« une information ») and the article must agree. Do not mix the two up.
Wrongdes informations utile / un renseignements
Rightdes renseignements / une information utile
Too direct or blunt, almost an order. Soften your requests with conditional forms.
WrongJe veux savoir où est la poste. / Donnez-moi l'adresse.
RightJ'aimerais savoir où est la poste. / Pourriez-vous me dire où est la poste ?
Do not mix two interrogative structures. Use « Où est… ? » or « Où se trouve… ? ». (« Où est-ce que la bibliothèque se trouve ? » is also correct, but « est-ce que » with « c'est » is not.)
WrongOù est-ce que c'est la bibliothèque ?
RightOù se trouve la bibliothèque ? / Où est la bibliothèque ?
React to the examiner's answer (« C'est pratique », « Très bien ») and build your next question on it. A string of unrelated questions sounds artificial.
Incorrect way to talk about sport. Use the partitive article: « faire du sport », or « pratiquer un sport ».
Mind the preposition after « s'inscrire ». You register « à » a place, a course or a club (« à la piscine »), and « pour » an activity. Pay attention to the construction you choose, and do not simply drop the preposition.
Do not stop too early. You need to fill the full 3 minutes 30 by covering all three required themes: shops, culture and sport.
The grammar this task needs
Asking questions politely: inversion, « est-ce que », and the conditional
The whole task is about obtaining information, and you are speaking to a neighbour you do not know. You need to vary your question forms and stay polite. The examiner will notice whether you can go beyond « Où est… ? » and use « Pourriez-vous me dire… ? » or « J'aimerais savoir… ». Note that the conditional softens a request; the present tense « Je veux savoir » sounds too blunt.
Open questions with interrogative words (où, comment, quel / quels, combien)
The task evaluates whether you can obtain a maximum of information. Closed questions only give « oui » or « non » and waste your 3 minutes 30. Open questions make the neighbour talk and give you material to react to. Remember that « quel » agrees with the noun (quel, quelle, quels, quelles).
Pronouns « y » and « en » to avoid repetition
When you pick up on the neighbour's answer, you will often refer to a place already mentioned. « Y » replaces a place introduced by « à, dans, sur », and « en » replaces a noun introduced by « de » or a quantity. Using them makes your speech more natural and shows B2–C1 control. Be careful with word order: the pronoun goes right before the verb (and before the infinitive when there is one).
- Comment peut-on s'y rendre sans voiture ?
- Est-ce qu'on y organise des ateliers ?
- Je vais y aller ce week-end.
- Il y a un marché ? J'en ai entendu parler.
Formal address (vouvoiement) and the simple future / near future for your plans
The task requires you to use « vous » throughout. Check verb endings and possessives (votre, vos). To thank your neighbour and show you will act on the advice, use the near future or simple future.

Ideas bank
| Position | Argument | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Shops and daily life | Ask where to do the weekly shopping and compare options: supermarket, local grocery, market. | Ask whether the supermarket is far on foot, what time it closes in the evening, and whether there is a weekend market. |
| Shops and daily life | Ask about a shop selling products from your country, which is natural for a newcomer. » |
| Shops and daily life | Ask about essential services: a late-opening pharmacy, a bank, a post office. | Ask if there is a pharmacy open late near the metro and until what time. |
| Culture | Ask about the municipal library: registration, cost, activities. | Ask whether registration is free for residents and whether there are workshops, conversation groups or film evenings. |
| Culture | Ask about cinemas, museums, shows and festivals, especially free events in summer. | Ask where to go for a film and whether the park hosts free festivals. |
| Culture | Ask how to get there by public transport, since a newcomer may not have a car. | Ask which metro line or bus to take and how long the trip takes. |
| Sports | Ask about the community centre: facilities, price of the subscription, registration procedure. | Ask if there is a pool and a gym, how much a monthly subscription costs, and whether you register at the front desk. |
| Sports | Ask about outdoor options: parks, cycle paths, running tracks. | Ask whether the nearby park has a path for running and cycling. |
| Sports | Ask about winter activities, a specific feature of life in Montréal. | Ask about the skating rink or cross-country skiing, and say you have never tried them. |
| Nuance | Finish with a personal question and an offer to meet again, which makes the exchange warm and natural. | Ask for the neighbour's favourite place in the area, say you will discover it tomorrow, and end with « à très bientôt dans l'immeuble ! » |
What the examiner looks for
The examiner is checking that you can lead a real conversation to obtain information: your questions must be varied, polite and clearly worded, covering all three themes (shops, culture, sport). They also look for your ability to react to the answers instead of reciting a list of questions. Consistent use of « vous », a range of question forms, and a natural opening and closing carry a lot of weight. Finally, you must fill the full 3 minutes 30 without long silences or stopping early.
