The task

You are spending your holidays in Canada and you feel like going to the cinema. You have a Canadian friend who works in a cinema and knows the programme well. You play the role of the holidaymaker looking for information. You have 2 minutes to prepare the exchange, which then lasts 3 minutes 30. You are the one leading the conversation by asking questions.

How to structure your answer
Greet your friend warmly, explain that you are on holiday and would like to see a film, then ask if he can give you advice.
Ask about the genres of films showing and the new releases, saying what you like (comedy, thriller, animated film, Québécois film, etc.).
Ask practical questions: screening times (evening, weekend), length of the film, language (original version, French version, subtitles) and the exact location of the cinema.
Find out about prices: full rate, reduced rate for students or young people, promotion day, buying online or on site, and a possible loyalty card.
React to every answer, offer to go together or to treat him, agree on a meeting, thank him and close the conversation.

Candidate: Hello Marc! How are you? I'm glad to have you on the phone. Examiner: Hi! I'm well, thanks. And you, are the holidays going well? Candidate: Very well, thanks. I'm in Canada for a few days and I'd like to go and see a film. Since you work at the cinema, maybe you could give me some advice? Examiner: Of course, with pleasure! Candidate: Great. First, what kinds of films are showing at the moment? Examiner: There's a Québécois comedy, an action film and an animated film. Candidate: Oh, the Québécois comedy interests me a lot, I'd like to discover the humour from here. Does it have good reviews? Examiner: Yes, people love it, it's doing very well. Candidate: Perfect! And what time are the screenings, for example on Saturday evening? Examiner: There's one at 7 pm and another at 9:30 pm. Candidate: OK. How long is the film? I want to be sure I can get home before the metro stops. Examiner: About an hour and forty minutes. Candidate: Very good, the 7 pm screening suits me then. Is the film in the original version or with subtitles? Examiner: It's in Québécois French, with optional English subtitles. Candidate: That's not a problem, I like hearing the local accent. Now, how much does a ticket cost? Examiner: About 15 dollars for the normal rate. Candidate: Is there a reduced rate, for example for students, or a promotion day? Examiner: Yes, on Tuesday it's 9 dollars for everyone. Candidate: Excellent! So I could go on Tuesday. Can you book online, or do you have to buy the tickets on site? Examiner: You can book on our website, it's safer. Candidate: Very good. Where exactly is your cinema, and how can I get there from the city centre? Examiner: It's near the metro station, ten minutes on foot from the centre. Candidate: Perfect. And as for the room, are there comfortable seats at the back? I like sitting far from the screen. Examiner: Yes, the room is big, there's plenty of space. Candidate: Great. Are you working on Tuesday evening? If so, I could drop by to say hello before the screening. Examiner: Yes, I'm there until 8 pm. Candidate: Then see you Tuesday around 6:30 pm! I'll book my seat from tonight. Thank you so much for all your advice, Marc, you've really helped me. Examiner: My pleasure, see you Tuesday! Candidate: See you Tuesday, have a good day!

Common mistakes
Mixing « tu » and « vous » sounds inconsistent. The examiner is your friend, so use « tu » from the first line to the last.
WrongComment vas-tu ? Pouvez-vous me conseiller ?
RightComment vas-tu ? Tu peux me conseiller ?
Closed questions get a bare yes or no and give you nothing to react to. Prefer open questions with an interrogative word.
WrongIl y a des films ?
RightQuels films sont à l'affiche ?
« C'est combien » and the word order « combien ça coûte la place » are too colloquial or clumsy for the exam. Use the standard structure.
WrongJe voudrais savoir c'est combien. / Combien ça coûte la place ?
RightCombien coûte une place ? / Quel est le prix d'une place ?
Do not mix up the spelling « film » (there is no « filme »). To say a film is showing, use « être à l'affiche » or « être projeté » rather than « le cinéma passe un film ».
WrongLe cinéma passe un filme.
RightCe film est à l'affiche. / Ce film est projeté à 19 h.
A « séance » is the screening at a given time, not the film itself. Likewise, use « horaires » and « programmation » instead of « programme » in this sense.
WrongQuelle séance tu me conseilles ?
RightQuel film tu me conseilles ? / Quels sont les horaires des séances ?
Do not chain questions without reacting to the answers. A short reaction shows you are listening and makes the conversation natural.
WrongIl y a une comédie. – Quel est le prix ?
RightIl y a une comédie. – Ah oui ? Ça me tente ! Et quel est le prix ?
Watch the article and preposition with « billet » and « place »: you buy tickets online and book your seat on the site.
Do not forget to close the exchange. Thank your friend, confirm the meeting and say goodbye.
The grammar this task needs
Open questions with interrogative words (quel, à quelle heure, combien, où, comment)
The task is to obtain information, so you have to lead the conversation with varied, open questions. Closed yes/no questions give the examiner short answers and leave you with nothing to build on.
Polite requests and wishes with the conditional (je voudrais, j'aimerais, tu pourrais)
You are asking a friend for a favour and advice. The conditional keeps the tone warm and polite without being stiff, and it is expected at B2/C1.
- J'aimerais aller voir un film pendant mes vacances.
- Tu pourrais peut-être me conseiller ?
Inversion and est-ce que in questions, and consistent use of « tu »
With a friend you stay informal (tu) from start to finish. Est-ce que is natural in speech, while simple inversion (Peut-on...?, Combien coûte...?) lets you vary your register. Mixing tu and vous is a typical error that markers penalise.
Pronouns y and en, and the future/near future for plans
To arrange an outing you need to refer back to places and to plan ahead without repeating nouns. Y replaces a place already mentioned, and the future or the conditional lets you fix a date.
- Je pourrais donc y aller mardi.
- Comment puis-je m'y rendre depuis le centre-ville ?
- Je réserve ma place dès ce soir.
- On se voit mardi vers 18 h 30 !

Ideas bank
| Position | Argument | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Question topic: genres and new releases | Ask what is showing and say what you like, so the examiner can recommend something suited to you. | Ask whether there is a Québécois comedy, a thriller or an animated film, and say you would like to discover local humour. |
| Question topic: times and length | Link the schedule to your own constraints: late evening, the weekend, public transport. | Ask about the Saturday evening screenings and the length of the film so you can get home before the last metro. |
| Question topic: language | Ask whether the film is in the original version, in French or subtitled, and say what suits you. | Say you like hearing the local accent and that English subtitles as an option are not a problem. |
| Question topic: prices | Go beyond the full price: reduced rate, promotion day, loyalty card, online price. | Ask if there is a discount on Tuesday and whether the loyalty card is worthwhile for a short stay. |
| Question topic: booking and place | Compare buying online and on site, and ask about the location of the cinema and the room. | Ask if you can book on the website, how far the cinema is from the city centre, and whether there are comfortable seats at the back. |
| Nuance: keeping the conversation going | Answer each reply with a short reaction before the next question so that the exchange stays natural. | After a price, say « Excellent ! » and then propose going on the cheaper day. |
| Nuance: social closing | Turn the information into a plan: invite your friend, set a time to meet, thank him. | Suggest meeting at 6:30 pm on Tuesday before the screening and offer to buy him a coffee. |
What the examiner looks for
The marker wants to see you lead the conversation: you ask varied, open questions on every point of the brief (genres, times, language, prices, place) rather than waiting for the examiner to speak. They check that you react to the answers, keep « tu » throughout and use a warm, natural register with a friend. They look for correct interrogative forms and polite conditionals, along with a good range of vocabulary (être à l'affiche, une séance, le tarif réduit). A clear opening, a closing with thanks and an agreed meeting, and a smooth rhythm over the 3 minutes 30 are also important for reaching B2/C1.
