You are taking Task 2 of the speaking test. You have 2 minutes to prepare the exercise, then the exchange lasts 3 minutes 30. Situation: you live in Montréal and you would like to adopt a pet. You go into a pet shop to get information. I play the pet shop employee. You play the customer: you are the one who starts the conversation. Your goal: obtain the information you need in order to choose the animal that suits your situation. Ask me a variety of questions (type of animal, temperament, upkeep, food, cost, health, adoption procedures, housing, etc.) and react to my answers.

How to structure your answer
Open the conversation politely: greet the employee, say you want to adopt a pet, and ask if they have a few minutes: "Auriez-vous quelques minutes à me consacrer ?"
Briefly explain your situation (apartment, full-time job, child) so your questions make sense. Keep it short: in task 2 you are there to get information, not to tell your life story.
Ask open questions about choosing the animal: which animal suits an apartment, its temperament, its adult size, its life expectancy. Use "Selon vous, quel animal conviendrait… ?"
Ask about daily life: food, care, time needed each day, whether the animal can be left alone during the day.
Cover practical matters: price, vaccinations, vet, insurance, accessories, the landlord's rules and the adoption procedure. Use polite forms such as "Pourriez-vous me dire… ?" or "J'aimerais savoir…"
React to every answer (rephrase it, compare, give a preference) with phrases like "C'est une bonne remarque" or "C'est avantageux", so the exchange sounds natural and not like a list of questions.
Conclude: thank the employee and announce your decision or a next visit: "Je reviendrai samedi avec ma fille." Always use vous.
Model answer
about 344 wordsCandidat : Bonjour, monsieur. Auriez-vous quelques minutes à me consacrer ? Examinateur : Bonjour ! Examinateur : Oui, surtout si on l'adopte jeune.

Candidate: Hello, sir. I would like to adopt a pet and I would like some advice to make the right choice. Would you have a few minutes to spare for me? Examiner: Hello! Yes, of course. What kind of animal are you looking for? Candidate: I haven't decided yet. I live in a two-bedroom apartment in Montréal and I work full time. In your opinion, which animal would suit this lifestyle? Examiner: A cat would probably be the most suitable. It is fairly independent. Candidate: OK. And what is its temperament in general? Does it get used to children easily? I have a six-year-old daughter. Examiner: Yes, especially if you adopt it young. You just have to teach your daughter to respect it. Candidate: That's a good point. How much time do I need to devote to it each day? Examiner: About an hour, for play and care. Candidate: That's not too demanding. And for food, what do you recommend? Is dry food enough? Examiner: Yes, good-quality dry food, with fresh water available at all times. Candidate: Very good. Do I need to plan a large budget for vaccinations and visits to the vet? Examiner: Count on about 400 dollars the first year, then a little less afterwards. Candidate: I see. And the adoption fees, how much are they? Examiner: About 150 dollars. The cat is already vaccinated and sterilised. Candidate: That's a good deal. Can you tell me whether I need my landlord's permission to have a cat in the apartment? Examiner: It depends on the lease. I advise you to ask him before adopting. Candidate: You're right, I'll check. One last thing: what are the adoption procedures? Do I have to sign a contract? Examiner: Yes, you fill in a form and sign an adoption contract. Candidate: Perfect. And could I meet the cat before making up my mind? Examiner: Of course, you can come back on Saturday. Candidate: Excellent, I'll come back on Saturday with my daughter. Thank you very much for all this information, it was very useful to me. Have a good day! Examiner: My pleasure, see you Saturday!

Common mistakes
Asking only closed (yes/no) questions. Use open questions to get more information and keep the conversation going.
Forgetting to react to what the examiner says and moving from one unrelated question to the next. Rephrase, compare or give an opinion before the next question.
Using tu or a too familiar register with the employee. In this situation you must use vous and polite language.
WrongT'as quoi comme chats ?
RightQuels chats avez-vous ?
Badly built inversion. Do not mix inversion with "ça" or with "est-ce que". Choose one correct structure.
WrongCombien ça coûte-t-il ? / Quel est-ce que le prix ?
RightCombien coûte-t-il ? / Quel est le prix ?
Confusing or inventing expressions for a pet. The standard term is "animal de compagnie"; "animal de maison" does not exist.
Wrongun animal de maison
Rightun animal de compagnie
Saying "I want to know" bluntly. Use polite formulas to ask for information.
WrongJe veux savoir le prix.
RightJ'aimerais savoir quel est le prix. / Pourriez-vous me dire quel est le prix ?
Mistakes in gender and agreement: litière and croquettes are feminine, and the adjective agrees with its noun (conseils is plural, so utiles).
Wrongun litière, le croquettes, des conseils utile
Rightune litière, les croquettes, des conseils utiles
Talking about yourself for too long. In task 2 the candidate must mainly obtain information, so keep your presentation short and ask your questions.
The grammar this task needs
Asking questions politely: inversion, est-ce que, and the conditional
In Task 2 you must obtain information from a stranger, so the register matters. The examiner listens for varied, correctly built questions (inversion, est-ce que, indirect questions) and for polite conditionals. Note that inversion is not compulsory: est-ce que is perfectly acceptable, but mixing the two shows range.
Indirect questions (word order after the introductory phrase)
Phrases such as « Pouvez-vous me dire… » or « J'aimerais savoir… » soften your questions. After them the word order is that of a statement, with no inversion; si is used for yes/no questions. Avoid « Pourriez-vous me dire est-ce que… ».
Open questions with interrogative words (quel, combien, comment, que)
The task is to gather varied information. Closed yes/no questions give short answers and make the exchange stall. Remember that quel agrees with the noun (quel, quelle, quels, quelles).
Reacting to answers: reformulating and expressing preference
You are expected to respond to what the employee says, not just run through a list. Short reactions in the present, the conditional and « je préfère / je trouve que » link your questions together and show interaction.

Ideas bank
| Position | Argument | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Choice of animal | Ask which animal suits a flat in Montréal and a full-time job. | A cat is more independent than a dog; ask whether a rabbit or a small rodent would also be suitable. |
| Character | Ask about temperament and compatibility with children. | You have a six-year-old daughter, so ask whether the animal is calm and tolerates being handled. |
| Adult size and lifespan | Find out how big the animal will get and how long it will live, since adoption is a long commitment. » and whether a puppy grows too large for a small flat. |
| Daily life | Ask how much time is needed each day and whether the animal can be left alone. | Can a cat stay alone during an eight-hour working day, and for a weekend trip? |
| Food and care | Ask about food type, quantity and grooming or litter maintenance. | Are croquettes enough? How often should the litter be changed? |
| Cost | Ask about adoption fees, vaccines, vet visits and yearly budget. | Adoption fees, then the first-year cost, then whether insurance is worthwhile. |
| Health | Check vaccinations, sterilisation and the vaccination record. | Ask whether the animal already has its « carnet de vaccination » and has been sterilised. |
| Housing rules | Ask whether the landlord must give permission and what the lease says. | The employee says it depends on the « bail », so you decide to check with the landlord before adopting. |
| Procedure | Ask about the adoption steps and whether you can meet the animal first. | Form, adoption contract, and a visit on Saturday with your daughter. |
| Nuance | Compare two options and state a preference to keep the exchange alive. » |
What the examiner looks for
The examiner is looking for a candidate who takes the initiative, asks varied open questions and keeps the conversation going for the full 3 minutes 30. Politeness is essential: use « vous », conditionals and indirect questions rather than blunt « je veux savoir ». Reacting to each answer (reformulating, commenting, stating a preference) matters as much as the questions themselves. Accurate question forms and agreements (la litière, les croquettes, des conseils utiles) separate B2 from C1. Do not spend long talking about yourself: give your situation in two sentences, then ask.
