The first scene after Halloween's title sequence puts us behind Michael Myers' eyes. It's Halloween night, 1963, and for several minutes, John Carpenter sure lets us witness the murder of a teenage girl, but he also makes us occupy the killer's perspective. And it's only when the mask is pulled away that we see the truth.
The eyes we occupied through a horrendous crime belong to a six-year-old child. And that opening does so much more than shock us. It establishes the visual language of the entire film. The camera glides through Haddonfield as if it's someone watching.
Michael can be distant, hiding at the edge of the frame or completely absent, and we still feel his presence moving through the neighborhood. The then low-budget film Halloween earned more than $70 million worldwide and became a blueprint generations of slashers would follow.
That was the opening. The rest of the episode (71 min) is in the player: every word clickable, with translation, saved words and flashcards.
