Taking on a Stephen King adaptation usually means figuring out what to cut, but when Mike Flanagan set out to turn one of King's shortest novels into eight episodes of television, he faced the opposite problem. What are you possibly at?
With an iconic film and multiple adaptations already out there, he wanted to give us a reason to experience the story again. And his approach starts with a shelter teenager who spent her life at home with a mother determined to protect her from the world.
And while her father's death forces her into public school for the first time, she arrives curious, eager, and ready to see the good in people. Unfortunately, high school has a way of testing that optimism, and she's beginning to discover abilities that can make this adjustment complicated for everyone.
