Traps

TrapExplanation
Allô only on the phoneAnd only to open, never as a greeting.
Always follow Allô with BonjourAllô alone is abrupt.
C'est de la part de qui ? is the standardNot Qui êtes-vous ?, which is blunt.
Ne quittez pas means "hold on"Not "don't leave".
rappeler means to call backAnd also to remind. Context decides.
Numbers are read in pairsSee chiffres-a-loreille.
Je vous laisse means goodbyeNot "I'm leaving you".

The sixth row is the one that causes real trouble. French phone numbers are read in pairs: 06 12 34 56 78 is zéro six, douze, trente-quatre, cinquante-six, soixante-dix-huit. English reads digits one at a time. So a French speaker saying their number sounds like a rapid series of two-digit numbers, and if you are expecting single digits you will lose it immediately. See chiffres-a-loreille.

rappeler and its family

four verbs, all used on the phone
VerbMeaningExample
appeler /a.pə.le/to callJe t'appelle ce soir. /ʒə ta.pɛl sə swaʁ/
rappeler /ʁa.ple/to call backJe te rappelle demain. /ʒə tə ʁa.pɛl də.mɛ̃/
téléphoner à /te.le.fo.ne a/to phoneJe téléphone à Marie. /ʒə te.le.fɔ.n‿a ma.ʁi/
joindre /ʒwɛ̃dʁ/to reach, get hold ofJe n'arrive pas à le joindre. /ʒə na.ʁiv pa.z‿a lə ʒwɛ̃dʁ/

Two grammatical points:

1. appeler is direct, téléphoner is indirect.

Pronunciation
J'appelle Marie. → Je l'appelle.direct object/ʒa.pɛl ma.ʁi/ · /ʒə la.pɛl/
Je téléphone à Marie. → Je lui téléphone.indirect object/ʒə te.le.fɔ.n‿a ma.ʁi/ · /ʒə lɥi te.le.fɔn/

English uses no preposition with either — "I call Marie", "I phone Marie" — so the à on téléphoner has to be learnt. See pronoms-cod and pronoms-coi.

2. rappeler has two meanings:

Pronunciation
Je te rappelle demain.I'll call you back tomorrow/ʒə tə ʁa.pɛl də.mɛ̃/
Je te rappelle que la réunion est à 10h.I remind you that/ʒə tə ʁa.pɛl kə la ʁe.y.njɔ̃ ɛ.t‿a di.z‿œʁ/

The second appears constantly in emails and notices: Nous vous rappelons que…

And se rappeler has a third meaning:

Je me rappelle ce jour. — I remember that day

It is synonymous with se souvenir de, but the prepositions differ:

✅✅
Je me rappelle ce jour.direct
Je me souviens de ce jour.with de
