The subjunctive rule
Any emotion followed by que requires the subjunctive:
| ✅ | ❌ |
|---|---|
Je suis content que tu sois là. | …que tu es là. |
J'ai peur qu'il ne vienne pas. | …qu'il ne vient pas. |
Je regrette que tu partes. | …que tu pars. |
But if the subject is the same, use an infinitive — and it is simpler:
| Two subjects | One subject |
|---|---|
Je suis content que tu sois là. /ʒə sɥi kɔ̃.tɑ̃ kə ty swa la/ | Je suis content d'être là. /ʒə sɥi kɔ̃.tɑ̃ dɛtʁ la/ |
J'ai peur qu'il parte. /ʒe pœʁ kil paʁt/ | J'ai peur de partir. /ʒe pœʁ də paʁ.tiʁ/ |
Je regrette que tu partes. /ʒə ʁə.ɡʁɛt kə ty paʁt/ | Je regrette de partir. /ʒə ʁə.ɡʁɛt də paʁ.tiʁ/ |
❌
Je suis content que je sois là.✅Je suis content d'être là.English follows the same instinct — "I'm glad to be here", not "I'm glad that I am here" — so the one-subject rule needs no learning. It is the two-subject case, with its subjunctive, that is new.
And one exception: espérer takes the indicative.
J'espère que tu viendras.— notviennes
Emotions with avoir
Several feelings use avoir and take no article:
| French | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
avoir peur | /a.vwaʁ pœʁ/ | to be afraid |
avoir honte | /a.vwaʁ ɔ̃t/ | to be ashamed |
avoir envie de | /a.vwaʁ ɑ̃.vi də/ | to feel like |
avoir hâte de | /a.vwaʁ at də/ | to look forward to |
avoir le cafard | /a.vwaʁ lə ka.faʁ/ | to feel down |
avoir la pêche | /a.vwaʁ la pɛʃ/ | to be full of energy |
J'ai hâte de te voir !— I can't wait to see you. Very common in friendly emails.Note that these use "have" where English uses "be":
J'ai peuris "I have fear", not "I am afraid". Seeavoir-expressions.
And their intensity takes très, not beaucoup: J'ai très peur. English agrees — "very afraid" — so trust the English here.
Traps
| Trap | Explanation |
|---|---|
emotion + que = subjunctive | Without exception, apart from espérer. |
| one subject = infinitive | content d'être, not que je sois. |
espérer takes the indicative | J'espère qu'il viendra. |
avoir peur takes no article | J'ai peur, not J'ai la peur. |
Intensity with très, not beaucoup | J'ai très peur. |
Ça me fait plaisir, not Je fais plaisir | A reversed structure, like plaire. |
Je suis désolé is an apology | For sympathy: Je suis désolé pour toi. |
Feelings in letters and emails
the phrases used in writing
In a friendly email, feelings are expressed with set formulas:
| Situation | French | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| pleased at news | Je suis vraiment content pour toi ! | /ʒə sɥi vʁɛ.mɑ̃ kɔ̃.tɑ̃ puʁ twa/ |
| congratulations | Félicitations ! Je suis ravi(e) pour toi. | /fe.li.si.ta.sjɔ̃/ · /ʒə sɥi ʁa.vi puʁ twa/ |
| sympathy | Je suis désolé(e) d'apprendre ça. | /ʒə sɥi de.zo.le da.pʁɑ̃dʁ sa/ |
| missing someone | Tu me manques. | /ty mə mɑ̃k/ |
| looking forward | J'ai hâte de te voir ! | /ʒe at də tə vwaʁ/ |
| concern | J'espère que tout va bien pour toi. | /ʒɛs.pɛʁ kə tu va bjɛ̃ puʁ twa/ |
Tu me manquesworks backwards and this is the most-made mistake in the whole topic. Literally it is "you are lacking to me" — so the person who is absent is the subject:
Tu me manques.— I miss youMa famille me manque.— I miss my familyJe te manque ?— do you miss me?English puts the person doing the missing first; French puts the person being missed first. Translating "I miss you" word for word gives
Je te manque, which means the opposite — "you miss me".The rule to hold: whoever is absent goes in front.
And in a formal letter, feelings are expressed very sparingly:
| French | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
Je vous remercie vivement. | /ʒə vu ʁə.mɛʁ.si viv.mɑ̃/ | I thank you warmly |
Je regrette de vous informer que… | /ʒə ʁə.ɡʁɛt də vuz ɛ̃.fɔʁ.me kə/ | I regret to inform you that |
C'est avec plaisir que je… | /sɛ a.vɛk plɛ.ziʁ kə ʒə/ | it is with pleasure that I |
Je vous prie de bien vouloir m'excuser. | /ʒə vu pʁi də bjɛ̃ vu.lwaʁ mɛks.ky.ze/ | I beg you to excuse me |
The detail is in email-formel and email-informel.
