Welcome back to the Catholic Sproust podcast where we know that every day is a feast day. It's October 22nd, so join us for St. John Paul II. Be not afraid. The cell of the Roman prison was small and plain. White walls, a metal chair, a table.
Pope John Paul II sat across from the man who had shot him. This man had fired two bullets into the Pope in St. Peter's Square two years earlier, and he had done so in front of thousands of people. The Pope had nearly died on the operating table. Now he was here in this cell, and he had asked the guards to step back so that he could speak privately
to this man. He took the man's hand in his, and he spoke quietly. He had already forgiven his would-be assassin, but he had come to say so in person. The man looked at the Pope and whispered, why aren't you dead? I don't understand.
