This audio poem is a production of poetryfoundation.org. My father spent the last few years of his life in a nursing home suffering from alcoholic dementia, which sounds like a thoroughly depressing subject for a poem, but in fact, there were moments of levity throughout that time with him because of his brain damage.
He was a carpenter, actually, and he was well used to working with all kinds of construction materials. And so the irony is that the thing with which he was so familiar was something he had trouble remembering the name of.
And so the daughter's attempt at kindness was to allow him to have another chance at recognizing it so that he didn't feel so unable. Cinderblock. On the first warm day, the AIDS fret about his pate fetch his hat.
