Here's your midday brief for Monday, October 5th. I'm Danny Lewis for The Wall Street Journal. Russian authorities are investigating the death of a researcher who contracted, quote, pneumonia of an unknown cause while working at a Siberian Institute for Infectious Disease.
The lack of clarity on the death has aggravated the mistrust of Russian health authorities that has lingered since the COVID-19 pandemic, when critics accused the government of suppressing the number of official deaths caused by the disease. People say laboratory tests found no microorganisms linked to her work, and none of her colleagues
have fallen ill. Russian authorities have taken measures to prevent the spread of an infectious disease, including placing the local hospital under quarantine and imposing a masking mandate at an aluminum factory that employs more than 2,000 people in the area.
