CELPIP Writing – Task Type Signals
Spot the signal → know the task. In CELPIP writing, a few key words in the prompt reveal the task type and the tone to use. Each card is a signal; the answer is the task type it points to. Legend: • Complaint (formal, firm but polite): complain, dissatisfied, damaged, faulty, late, refund • Request for information (formal, polite): find out, ask about, enquire, more information • Apology (sincere, apologetic): you missed, you forgot, apologize, explain why • Suggestion (formal, constructive): suggest, propose, has asked for ideas, improve • Invitation (warm (formal or friendly)): invite, organizing, hosting, planning a party • Accepting / declining (polite, gracious): you have been invited, reply to the invitation • Informing (formal, neutral, clear): inform, let them know, notify, announce, new schedule • Thank you (warm, sincere): thank, helped you, covered for you, lent you • Job-related (formal, professional): resign, hand in your notice, request leave, apply for • Recommendation (formal, positive): recommend, reference, suggest a place • Cancelling / rescheduling (apologetic, formal): cancel, postpone, reschedule, cannot make it • Landlord / neighbour (formal, firm but civil): landlord, building manager, apartment, repair, noise • Informal (casual, friendly): a friend, your cousin, share the news, catch up
