Being an English speaker is a mixed advantage here. Most of the field is English already —
le wifi,le smartphone,le bug,le cloud,un mail. The trap is that the exceptions are invisible: a word that ought to be borrowed simply is not, and the English one is wrong.
English word French does not use it It uses computer — l'ordinateursoftware — le logicielfile — le fichierscreen — l'écranpassword — le mot de passeAnd
le texto, not "text".Je t'envoie un texto.Three of these —ordinateur, logiciel, courriel— were deliberately coined to avoid the English, so they are the ones an official form will use.

Traps
| Trap | Explanation |
|---|---|
le portable is ambiguous | Both mobile and laptop. Add téléphone or ordinateur to be precise. |
télécharger goes both ways | Download and upload. To be precise: télécharger / téléverser. |
la souris is feminine | The animal and the mouse alike. |
enregistrer is both save and record | Context decides. |
marcher for devices | Ça ne marche pas — not travailler. travailler is for people only. |
Internet takes no article | sur Internet, not sur l'Internet |
les données is feminine plural | les données personnelles. |
marcher — the verb machines take
and why `travailler` is wrong
In French, devices "walk" rather than work:
| ❌ | ✅ |
|---|---|
L'ordinateur ne travaille pas. | L'ordinateur ne marche pas. |
Le wifi travaille ? | Le wifi marche ? |
travailler is for living things. For machines there are three verbs:
| Verb | Register | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
marcher | spoken, the commonest | /maʁ.ʃe/ |
fonctionner | more formal | /fɔ̃k.sjɔ.ne/ |
être en panne | to be broken | /ɛtʁ ɑ̃ pan/ |
English uses one verb for both — a person works, a machine works — so there is nothing to warn you. French splits them, and the split is not optional: Le wifi ne travaille pas is not a slight error, it is a sentence a French speaker would not produce.
And marcher does far more work than "to walk":
| Phrase | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Ça marche ! | /sa maʁʃ/ | OK, sounds good |
Ça marche bien. | /sa maʁʃ bjɛ̃/ | it's going well |
Ça n'a pas marché. | /sa na pa maʁ.ʃe/ | it didn't work out |
faire marcher quelqu'un | /fɛʁ maʁ.ʃe kɛl.kœ̃/ | to wind someone up |
Ça marcheis one of the most common spoken confirmations there is — the everyday equivalent of "sure", "will do", "OK".
