Reading a housing ad
the abbreviations that appear in every listing
French housing ads are dense with abbreviations, and they turn up in exam reading passages too:
| Abbreviation | Meaning | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
T2 F2 | two main rooms | /te dø/ · /ɛf dø/ |
m² | square metres | /mɛtʁ kaʁ.ʁe/ |
RDC | ground floor | /ɛʁ.de.se/ |
CC | charges included — charges comprises | /se.se/ |
HC | charges not included | /aʃ.se/ |
Meublé | furnished | /mø.ble/ |
Non meublé vide | unfurnished | /nɔ̃ mø.ble/ · /vid/ |
Prox. métro | near the metro | /pʁɔks/ · /me.tʁo/ |
Cuis. équipée | fitted kitchen | /kɥi/ · /e.ki.pe/ |
Asc. | lift | /ask/ |
Parking | parking | /paʁ.kiŋ/ |

And a French rental application is a heavy file. To rent a flat you will normally be asked for:
| Document | French | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| proof of identity | pièce d'identité | /pjɛs di.dɑ̃.ti.te/ |
| last three payslips | trois derniers bulletins de salaire | /tʁwa dɛʁ.nje byl.tɛ̃ də sa.lɛʁ/ |
| employment contract | contrat de travail | /kɔ̃.tʁa də tʁa.vaj/ |
| tax assessment | avis d'imposition | /a.vi dɛ̃.po.zi.sjɔ̃/ |
| a guarantor | garant | /ɡa.ʁɑ̃/ |
Income normally has to be three times the rent. This also comes up in administration.
One expectation to reset. In Canada, the UK and the US the decisive test is a credit check. France does not run one — there is no equivalent score. The file replaces it, and the garant replaces the reference: a third party who signs to pay your rent if you cannot. Foreigners without a French guarantor generally use a paid guarantee service, which is normal and not held against you.
