Talking about a film — a ready-made structure

five sentences that carry the speaking exam

"Tell me about a film you have seen recently" is one of the standard speaking prompts. This structure scores well:

1. Introduce it — in the perfect

Récemment, j'ai vu un film qui s'appelle [title].

2. Genre and director

C'est une comédie de [director].

3. The plot — in the present

Ça se passe à Paris. Ça parle d'un homme qui cherche son frère.

A plot summary is always given in the present tense, even for an old film. The rule is firm in French.

English does this too — "It's set in Paris, and this guy is looking for his brother" — so the present tense here needs no conscious effort. What does not transfer is ça parle de. English says "it's about", and translating that as c'est à propos de is understood but distinctly foreign. Ça parle de… is the phrase French actually uses.

4. Your opinion — in the perfect or imperfect

J'ai beaucoup aimé. Les acteurs étaient excellents.

5. A recommendation — si + present, then the future

Je te le recommande. Si tu aimes les comédies, ça te plaira.

Three things that earn extra marks:
