It was nearly two years before Viola Broadbent finally saw her husband. Over the past 22 months, she had suffered as a single parent, not knowing where her husband was or if she would ever see him again. even worse she'd been ripped away from her home and dropped in the middle of community she didn't
know or trust and which distrusted her right back and then a few months later she was taken from that community and put into a different one that she still didn't know and still didn't trust finally she had at least one serious scare about losing her children along the way But all that was over in the fall of 1955, when her husband, David, arrived to bring her and their children home.
He had actually been home for some time now, but continued to have to jump through legal hoops in order to reunite with his family. David arrived in an old jalopy that many of the men in his position were using, packed everyone up, and headed north. The Broadbent's experience was typical for the residents of Short Creek immediately following the 1953 raid. Fear, relocation, separation, but ultimately an unlikely legal victory and reunion.
