Episode 262: The Raid on Short Creek, Part II: The Raids Before the Raid
The polygamy of the fundamentalists living at Short Creek was always going to ensure that they were going to run afoul of the law. If I may remind you of exactly how big of a nerd I am for a second, there's a line from an episode of Star Trek the next generation that I absolutely love. The episode itself revolves around a religious figure appearing among the Klingons who begins to upend the status quo, much to the frustration of the current regime. I won't bore you with
all the details, but the Enterprise gets pulled into this whole affair. And there's a great scene where Captain Picard is discussing the situation with Galron, the Klingon High Chancellor. And Galron says, have you ever fought an idea of Picard? It has no weapon to destroy, nobody to kill.
And I like that line so much because it's so true. Fighting against an idea is practically impossible because at what point can you say you've won?
