The Central Arizona Project became a reality within our lifetimes and today delivers water to Maricopa and Pinal counties. But the genesis for such an idea actually goes back nearly a century. And the real fight to get the thing built would start in the latter end of the 1940s, as Carl Hayden made it his mission to bring Colorado River water to central Arizona.

you know that this is the Hayden Rose Aqueduct. Maybe it's because I've been doing this podcast for so long, or because I've covered both those names recently, but the combination of Hayden and Rhodes stood out to me immediately. This is not going to shock anybody, but this canal is part of this Central Arizona project, one of the largest, most expensive aqueduct projects

ever constructed in the whole of the United States. And the names on the canal should tell us who exactly was trying to get this project approved at the congressional level. What that sign won't tell you, however, is the long convoluted fight that happened in the courts and at the highest levels of government before that canal could become a reality.
