Back in episode 233, I got us primed to talk about World War II by quoting State historian Marshall Trimble, who said that in the future, historians will probably divide Arizona's timeline into two parts, Pioneer history and the modern state, with World War II serving as the handy dividing line between the two. And ever since that episode, we have watched that dividing
line being drawn. At the end of the 1930s, Trimble told us Phoenix was basically still a countdown, surrounded by even smaller, more rural communities. But then the war came. Suddenly, thousands of Chinese British and American pilots were receiving their wings at Air Base as established in Arizona.
General George S. Patton was training soldiers and nurses in the Sanorn Desert. Many factoring springed the life as wartime industries chose to set up shop in the Grand Canyon State. Soldiers, Hermann Marines, incarcerated Japanese Americans, German POWs, politicians, and M. Merrinden resistance leaders all cross their stage at some point during the war years.
