This is the Engines of Our Ingenuity, made possible by the friends of KUHF, Houston. Today we examine how protocols have shaped communication throughout the evolution of humans, as well as that of the machines they create. The University of Houston presents this series about the machines that make our world work, and the creative people who made them. People have used protocols for thousands of years.
A protocol is a shared set of rules. It tells people what to do, what to expect, and how to respond. Early protocols guided talks between rulers and nations. They set the order for ceremonies, official letters, and visits from messengers.
These rules were not just polite customs. They helped leaders avoid confusion and conflict. Everyone understood the steps, so important messages had a better chance of reaching the right person with the right meaning.
