Bonjour, dear listeners. For this special season of the Duolingo French podcast, we are celebrating the arts. We're revisiting some of our favorite episodes featuring singers, dancers, actors, and other performers in the francophone world. Today's episode is from August 2021, and it takes us to the middle of the Indian Ocean, where we meet
Waida Bakkari. Waida lives on the tiny French-speaking island of Maillote, and she was just 17 years old when her mother signed her up for an opera competition. The only problem? Waida had barely even heard of opera. Listen to the episode to find out how she did, and stay tuned until the end for an update on what Waida has been up to. And now, on to the episode.
It was spring 2020 in the early weeks of the pandemic, and 17-year-old Waida Bakarri was long on her bed at home on the island of Mayotte. Mayotte is a French overseas territory, a department of the mayor. YA that was flipping through her phone and she was singing to herself.
That was the opening. The rest of the episode (25 min) is in the player: every word clickable, with translation, saved words and flashcards.
