The Baroness Whitestone Surrenders. 1809, Willowford, England. The Viscount of Winnisley rapped hard on the white door with the bright brass ball of his cane and listened for any sign that the inmates of the little apartment above the high street shop were stirring. He had ridden more than thirty miles today, his shoulder felt inclined to rip away from
his back, and he was in no mood for sluggish service. It might well be late at night, and almost every house in this shoddy little village might be dark, but a doctor must be used to late night rousing, and Henry was a man in need. He hammered the door again, hard enough this time to put dents in the painted wood. Every minute he spent standing out here was another moment in hell.
He'd forgotten how unbearable this kind of bone-grinding pain was. If he had remembered, he would never have raced that skittish gelding. He was no young fool any more, with bones that never broke and a body that could take any beating. A man in his teens could take a fall. A man in his thirties could not. What an idiot he'd been to take that bet.
