September 27: ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: A Confession That Changed Everything
One dying peasant's confession redirected St. Vincent de Paul's entire priesthood toward France's forgotten rural poor. After hearing a dying man's confession reveal sins hidden for years with no priest nearby, Vincent de Paul founded a community of priests to reach forgotten villages. With his lifelong friend and partner Louise de Marillac, he also helped found the Daughters of Charity — sisters who served in the streets rather than behind convent walls. "Their convent was the sickroom, their chapel was the parish church, and their cloister was the streets of the city." Today's challenge is...

Welcome back to the Catholic Sproust podcast where we know that every day is a feast day. It's September 27th, so join us for St. Vincent de Paul, a confession that changed everything. A dying man lay in bed with his family gathered close by. A young priest held the hand of the peasant man and sat beside him to hear his final confession.
What poured out surprised and frightened Father Vincent. Serious sins kept silent for years and hidden away for shame. With no priest nearby to help him find confession, the man had been forced to carry these sins with him.
The man died at last forgiven, but Father Vincent couldn't stop thinking about how many other people in the French countryside were living and dying the exact same way, forgotten by a church too busy or too far away to bring them the sacraments. Welcome back.
