September 12: ST. FRANCIS CHOE & BL. MARIA YI: United in Christ
St. Francis Choe risked his life recovering the bodies of Korea's martyrs — and his own martyred family raised Korea's second native priest. Married in secret amid Korea's brutal anti-Catholic persecution, Francis Choe and Maria Yi built a hidden Christian village and quietly passed their faith to their children by lamplight. Both parents were martyred in 1839, but their son went on to become the second Korean-born Catholic priest in history. "Faith, once truly planted, doesn't stay buried." Welcome back to the Catholic Sproust podcast, where we know that every day is a feast day. It's September 12th, so join us for St. Francis Cho and Blessed Maria Ye, United in Christ. Under the cover of darkness, Francis crept toward a place of execution, located outside the city walls.
This was one of the most dangerous errands imaginable. Catholics were being hunted down and killed across Korea, and here he was, walking straight toward the bodies of the very martyrs the government had just executed. Francis wasn't afraid of what he might find.
He was afraid of what would happen to their bodies if no one came to carry them home and bury them with dignity. So he went anyway, again and again, knowing it would one day cost him his life. Welcome back, Sprouse.
