This is NPR News Now. The latest headlines every hour. Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot an immigrant to New York City
late Thursday afternoon while a young boy was in the man's car. Police say the person who was shot is conscious and was treated at a nearby hospital. Steve and custom bombs as the shooting sparked protests and calls for ice to leave the city. Police pushed back protesters as they surrounded a law enforcement vehicle trying to leave upper
Manhattan where the shooting took place. Its window had been shattered. In a written statement, Mayor Zaraam-Mamdani called the shooting an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation, and he demanded that the president end all ice enforcement actions in New York. Governor Kathy Hochul said she expressed outrage in a call with President Trump.
