Understanding the new federal school choice program
- News bulletin
- Business & money
This week, the Treasury Department released rules for a new nationwide school choice program that could end up providing billions of dollars to students attending private schools. Taxpayers will be able to opt in to the program by giving up to $1,700 to third-party groups that provide scholarships to students, and can later deduct that donation from their taxes. Many public school advocates, however, oppose the program. Also in this episode: weaker-than-expected jobs data and reimagined research parks. Every story has an economic angle. New jobs data came in weaker than expected and new rules for how we pay for kids' education. From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. The latest monthly federal jobs report is out this morning. We added 29,000 jobs in September.
Analysts were expecting 84,000 jobs. The unemployment rate is up slightly to 4.2 percent. Joining me now for more on the report is Christopher Lowe, Chief Economist at FHN Financial.
Chris, this report missed expectations, but were there other surprises in it? Yeah, it missed by a lot. Not only was the headline number weaker than expected
