- History
Siptah, Tausret, Setnakht. Between 1205--1202 BCE, the royal house of Ramesses II crumbled into illegitimacy. After Siptah, the queen Tausret declared herself pharaoh. Hello, and welcome back to the History of Egypt podcast. Episode 245. Revenge of the Seth By 1204 BCE, Egypt's royal house was on shaky ground.
For the past five years, a teenager named Sipata had sat upon the throne. But Pharaoh was a power in name only. authority lay with a queen, Tawusret, and a courtier, Bai. The latter had exercised incredible influence over government, palace, and even foreign affairs. Bai had dominated
the king, and acted in his name. Now, Bai was dead, executed on orders of Pharaoh – maybe Sipata himself, maybe someone in the government – say, Tawusret? Whoever arranged it, violent dispute had broken out in the court, and blood flowed. Cepitar's victory, quote-unquote, was short-lived.
