Three years ago this morning, October 7th at 6.29am, the sirens started. I slept right through them. It was Shabbat and Simchat Torah. And my phone was off.
When I walked to synagogue that morning, the streets of Tel Aviv were so quiet. The synagogue was quiet too. I remember thinking people must have left the city for the holiday weekend. They had not.
They were in their safe rooms and the country was under attack. I found out the full details later on when I turned my cell phone on after the holiday was out. Today at 6.29 a.m. the country stopped again for a minute of silence in honor of October 7th. Monday was the official state memorial at Mount Herzl.
That was the opening. The rest of the episode (7 min) is in the player: every word clickable, with translation, saved words and flashcards.
