- Conversation
- Society
Fire departments have traditionally measured outcomes by what was lost: civilian deaths, injuries, and property damage. But what happens when departments start measuring what firefighters saved? In this episode, we examine the shift toward positive fire service metrics, including firefighter rescues, lives saved, property protected, and the financial value of fire department operations. Newer initiatives such as the Firefighter Rescue Survey are helping capture outcomes that traditional reporting systems often overlooked. in residential fires every year. That bounces out to around 200 fire deaths every month, maybe a little more than 200. The civilians can do better. Our fire inspectors
and do better. I'm not criticizing anybody, but it's good to see that the numbers are dropping. In lieu of that, some of the people, Firefighter Rescue Survey and Firefighter Mayday Survey, they're doing a great job. And the numbers, we're going to less fires, but we're saving more people. We're rescuing more people in fires. So that is something to be proud of.
