Notes

  • coûter les yeux de la tête — to cost the eyes out of your head. English says an arm and a leg; the idiom is equally vivid and equally fixed.

  • cher stays invariable here: Ces chaussures coûtent cher, never chères, because it is working as an adverb. See adverbes.
