| Form | Means | Sound |

avoir | to have — here it carries no meaning, it is only the auxiliary | /a.vwaʁ/ |
The table
How it is built
| Pronunciation | ||
|---|---|---|
j'ai + parlé | I spoke | /ʒe/ · /paʁ.le/ |
tu as + parlé | you spoke | /ty a/ · /paʁ.le/ |
il a + parlé | he spoke | /il a/ · /paʁ.le/ |
nous avons + parlé | we spoke | /nu.z‿a.vɔ̃/ · /paʁ.le/ |
vous avez + parlé | you spoke | /vu.z‿a.ve/ · /paʁ.le/ |
ils ont + parlé | they spoke | /il.z‿ɔ̃/ · /paʁ.le/ |
Only avoir is conjugated. That parlé does not change with the subject — not for elle, not for ils.
There is one case where it does change: when a direct object comes before the verb.

A warning English does not prepare you for. English splits this into "I spoke" and "I have spoken", and the difference matters. French does not:
j'ai parlécovers both. So do not reach forimparfaitwhen English would say "I was speaking" either — the imperfect is a different job, and it is inpc-vs-imparfait.
Exceptions
| Exception | What happens |
|---|---|
être /ɛtʁ/ and 15 verbs of motion take être /ɛtʁ/ | they have their own page |
Reflexive verbs always take être /ɛtʁ/ | je me suis lavé /ʒə mə sɥi la.ve/ |
In the negative, ne … pas /nə pa/ wraps avoir /a.vwaʁ/ | Je n'ai pas parlé. /ʒə ne pa paʁ.le/ — not the whole phrase |
In an inverted question, avoir /a.vwaʁ/ moves first | As-tu parlé ? /a.ty paʁ.le/ |
An adverb sits between avoir /a.vwaʁ/ and the participle | J'ai bien mangé. /ʒe bjɛ̃ mɑ̃.ʒe/ |
| Agreement only with a preceding direct object | it has its own page |
Examples
| English | French | Pronunciation |

Common mistakes
| ❌ | ✅ | Why |
|---|---|---|
J'ai parler. | J'ai parlé. | It is the participle, not the infinitive — and they sound identical |
Je ne ai pas parlé. | Je n'ai pas parlé. | ne elides before a vowel |
J'ai pas parlé ne. | Je n'ai pas parlé. | ne … pas wraps avoir, not everything |
J'ai mangé bien. | J'ai bien mangé. | The adverb goes in the middle |
J'ai allé. | Je suis allé. | aller takes être |
The spelling trap
`parler` and `parlé` sound exactly the same
| Written | IPA |
|---|---|
parler infinitive | /paʁ.le/ |
parlé participle | /paʁ.le/ |
parlez the vous form | /paʁ.le/ |
All three are /paʁ.le/. In speech you tell them apart from context; in writing you have to get it right.
The written test: swap the verb for finir —
