Agreeing and disagreeing

how to disagree without being rudeA2

In one line

être d'accord avec for a person and sur for a topic — and a polite disagreement always opens with a partial concession.

Do not use the last three in a formal conversation or an exam. Blunt disagreement is considered rude in French.

The polite-disagreement template — three steps

In French, direct disagreement is harsh. This template is standard:

StepExamplePronunciation
1. partial concessionJe comprends votre point de vue…/ʒə kɔ̃.pʁɑ̃ votʁ pwɛ̃ də vy/
2. disagreement…mais je ne suis pas tout à fait d'accord./mɛ ʒə nə sɥi pa tu.t‿a fɛ da.kɔʁ/
3. reasonEn effet, il me semble que…/ɑ̃.n‿e.fɛ il mə sɑ̃bl kə/

Some ready openings for step one:

FrenchPronunciationEnglish
Je comprends, mais…/ʒə kɔ̃.pʁɑ̃ mɛ/I understand, but…
C'est un bon argument, cependant…/sɛt œ̃ bɔ̃n aʁ.ɡy.mɑ̃ sə.pɑ̃.dɑ̃/that's a good point, however…
Vous n'avez pas tort, mais…/vu na.ve pa tɔʁ mɛ/you're not wrong, but…
Je vois ce que vous voulez dire, pourtant…/ʒə vwa sə kə vu vu.le diʁ puʁ.tɑ̃/I see what you mean, and yet…
Il y a du vrai là-dedans, mais…/i.lja dy vʁɛ la.də.dɑ̃ mɛ/there's some truth in that, but…

English does the same thing — "I take your point, but…" — so the strategy is familiar. What differs is that in French it is closer to obligatory than optional.

d'accord — with avec or sur

StructureUsed forPronunciation

Nous sommes d'accord sur ce point.we agree on that point/nu sɔm da.kɔʁ syʁ sə pwɛ̃/
Je suis d'accord pour partir demain.I'm happy to leave tomorrow/ʒə sɥi da.kɔʁ puʁ paʁ.tiʁ də.mɛ̃/

Traps

TrapExplanation
d'accord avec a person, sur a topicSwapping them is noticeable.
Vous avez tort is bluntDo not use it in an exam. Je ne suis pas d'accord is enough.
Si ! is the positive answer to a negative question— Tu n'es pas d'accord ? — Si ! means "yes, I do agree".
En effet confirms, En fait correctsThe two are opposites.
Je suis d'accord, not Je suis accordThe d' is compulsory.
Ça dépend is not a complete answerYou have to continue: Ça dépend de….
Disagreement without a reason scores nothingAlways follow with parce que or en effet.

Two English habits to watch. First, "agree" is a verb in English and an adjective phrase in French: Je suis d'accord, never J'agree or Je accorde. Second, English has no Si — when someone says "you don't agree, do you?" and you do, English says "yes I do" with emphasis. French has a dedicated word: Si !

Why direct disagreement does not work in French

a cultural difference that carries marks

In French discussion, disagreement is entirely acceptable — even encouraged. French speakers argue more readily than many cultures.

But the form matters: a flat, unprefaced disagreement is taken as an attack on the person, not on the idea.

The unwritten rule: first show you have understood them.

❌✅
Non, c'est faux.Je comprends, mais je ne suis pas sûr que…
Vous avez tort.Ce n'est pas tout à fait mon avis.
N'importe quoi.Là, je ne vous suis pas.

And in an exam this carries marks directly — under "sociolinguistic appropriateness".

Three softening tools:

ToolExamplePronunciation
the conditionalJe dirais plutôt que…/ʒə di.ʁɛ ply.to kə/
a hedging adverbJe ne suis pas tout à fait d'accord./ʒə nə sɥi pa tu.t‿a fɛ da.kɔʁ/
a returned questionVous ne pensez pas que… ?/vu nə pɑ̃.se pa kə/

The last is the politest form of disagreement — instead of saying "you are wrong", you offer another possibility:

Vous ne pensez pas qu'il y ait aussi des inconvénients ?

And note that this structure takes the subjunctive — because it is a negative question. See exprimer-opinion.

One difference in how the softening works. English softens with extra words — "I'd have thought", "I'm not sure I'd go that far", "with respect". French softens with grammar: the conditional (Je dirais), the hedged negative (pas tout à fait), the negative question. Translating English hedges word for word produces something wordy rather than polite.
