tout droit/tu dʁwa/ means straight on.à droite/a dʁwat/ means to the right. The only difference is a pronouncedt— and getting it wrong sends you the wrong way.English makes this harder, not easier, because "right" itself means both "correct/straight" and "the opposite of left". The French words are related for the same reason —
droitoriginally meant "straight", and the right hand was the "straight" one. Listen for the finalt: if you hear it, turn.

Why this topic matters in the speaking exam
because it is one of the fixed scenarios
In the speaking sections at A1 and A2, "asking for and giving directions" is a standard scenario.
And what the examiner assesses is not vocabulary but correct use of the imperative.
| Level | What is expected | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
Three things that earn extra marks:
1. Sequencing words — d'abord, ensuite, puis, enfin. See connecteurs-logiques.
D'abord, allez tout droit. Ensuite, tournez à gauche. Enfin, c'est sur votre droite.
2. A landmark — not just the direction but something they will see.
Vous verrez une pharmacie sur votre gauche.
3. An estimate of time or distance.
C'est à environ dix minutes à pied.
And one habit to change. English gives directions with softeners — "you'll want to turn left", "you'll need to carry on", "just take the second right". French uses the bare imperative and it is not brusque: Tournez à gauche is the normal, polite form. Translating "you'll want to" produces something no French speaker would say.
A related common error: using vous allez instead of allez. Both are understood, but the imperative is more natural. See imperatif.
