Reddit user SmoothChannel5741. When I was eight, I took the bus home every day from school. I lived in a semi-secluded rural town that was basically in the woods. Most families, including mine, lived in a house attached to a gravel road surrounded

by large evergreens. Sometimes the only way you could tell there was a house nearby was the plastic mailbox along the road. One day I got off at my spot like usual.

No one else lived on my street, so I was alone as I stepped off the bus. Down the gravel road I saw a man messing with one of the mailboxes. I had never seen him before, which was weird. Word travels fast in our small town to the point where if anyone new moves in,

we know about it within a day or two. He was a stranger, not a neighbor. I was still about ten minutes away from home, and he was in the way. I decided he wasn't really a threat, and continued towards him as the bus pulled away.

As I got closer, I realized he was mumbling under his breath. It was incoherent and should have been concerning, but I was eight, and not very good at identifying odd behavior, so I didn't really mind, to be honest. I passed him without issue, and pulled out my Nintendo 3DS from my pocket.

I had been playing it on the bus and wanted to finish the level in order to save my game. When I started playing, I heard a raspy voice behind me. It was so creepy it sent chills down my back. I decided to ignore the man and pick up my pace, but he kept repeating his question until

I had no choice but to respond. I turned to look at him and was met with the most terrifying stare. It looked like he was about to kill me. His eyes were wide, his head was shaking, and he was scratching his neck.

And it was just the two of us alone in this thick forest. At that point I knew I wasn't safe. I started to quietly cry and turn back forward without saying a word. I kept reminding myself I was close to home, but then I heard him running towards me.

The sound of his shoes on the gravel was unmistakable. He was sprinting, and before I could even run myself he had reached me. I tensed, fearing the worst, but he just ran right past me. He went about 20 feet ahead and then jerked to the right, running off into the forest.

My silent weeping had turned into a full-on sob at this point, and I took off running, screaming for my mom. Even though he had run away, I had no idea if he would come back. The woods were so dense that I wasn't able to see him anymore.

But I could hear him. He was laughing maniacally at first, then screamed in agony, and then went back It was absolutely terrifying. It continued all the way home, and when I finally arrived at my house neither of my parents

were home yet. I had to wait for them cowering in my bed. It was probably only about ten minutes, but to an eight-year-old that was an eternity. I told my parents about what happened and they calmed me down.

Since he didn't touch me they didn't file a police report, and thankfully I never saw him again. I'll never forget how scared I was in that moment though, and wonder how he ended up in our small town. This time of year always makes me rethink what I actually wear.
