Why the Screen Detox Feels So Hard: Helping Kids Relearn How to Want Ordinary Life
- Interview
In this episode of the Celebrate Kids Podcast, Dr. Kathy Koch and Wayne Stender explore why kids can become irritable, anxious, restless, and unfocused when screen time suddenly drops after a season of heavier use. They discuss how screens shape attention and daily rhythms and how parents can create healthier patterns without making every break from routine a technology binge. Parents will be encouraged to use gradual transitions and help kids develop new rhythms and desires that support self control and healthier engagement with everyday life.

Technology is addictive and technology will take us away from the presence in the home. Don't be afraid of the dark. Be careful with stars. Not every light is gonna guide you, baby. Not every light is gonna guide you. So Dr. Kathy, today on the Celebrate Kids podcast and this daily segment, Facing the Dark, I want to ask you a question because I have these things in my life. Is there anything in your life or maybe has been in your life that you would be willing to admit on air?
That has maybe been something that hasn't been necessarily good for you, but you couldn't imagine your life without it? Oh my goodness. How much time do we have? How many things should I list? The first thing that comes to mind and you're gonna laugh is it's peanut M&Ms. It's something so simple. When I was a college student, so this is forever to go,
I had an old-fashioned gumball machine in my dorm room that was filled with peanut M&Ms that actually worked. And students would come into my room with a nickel and put it in there and get a handful of peanut M&Ms.
That was the opening. The rest of the episode (18 min) is in the player: every word clickable, with translation, saved words and flashcards.
