This put them in the perfect position to make contact with the American
carriers, which were busy overseeing the sending of planes, supplies, and men to Vandegrift. The Japanese combined fleet might have retreated to the north, but their underwater comrades were keeping the fight going. Their Saratoga was damaged, now heading to Pearl for repairs, but the WASP was lost, leaving the Hornets as the only operational carrier the Americans had
in the South Pacific. How would this affect the Marines on Guadalcanal? Time would tell, but how much time?
