battalion commanders, moving up his men on his own initiative, Colonel Edson's line was back to being pressed, having lost the southern half of the ridge. True, the Marines were reorganizing their artillery to help with the enemy attack but so too were the Japanese and they wouldn't need much to break Edson's
horseshoes shaped a defensive line of 300 men. But the Americans had one advantage over the Japanese. They controlled the height of the ridge. So someone came up with the idea of simply pulling a pin on a grenade and then letting it roll downhill right to the enemy.
