comme si — and its tense

The present never follows comme si:

SituationTenseExamplePronunciation
simultaneous with the main verbimperfectIl parle comme s'il savait./il paʁl kɔm sil sa.vɛ/
prior to the main verbpluperfectIl parle comme s'il avait tout vu./il paʁl kɔm sil a.vɛ tu vy/

❌ comme s'il sait ❌ comme s'il saura ✅ comme s'il savait

This is the si rule again: after si, no future and no subjunctive. See si-hypothese.

English does exactly this after "as if". "He talks as if he knew", not "as if he knows"; "as if he had seen everything". The same backshift, for the same reason — it is a hypothesis, so it steps one tense back. So this rule is free: if your English says "knew", write savait.

comme — four jobs

JobExamplePronunciation
resemblanceIl est fort comme un lion./i.l‿ɛ fɔʁ kɔ.m‿œ̃ ljɔ̃/
cause (sentence-initial)Comme il pleut, je reste./kɔ.m‿il plø ʒə ʁɛst/
in the role ofIl travaille comme serveur./il tʁa.vaj kɔm sɛʁ.vœʁ/
exclamationComme c'est beau !/kɔm sɛ bo/

The difference from en: Il travaille comme serveur means that is his job. Il parle en professeur means he speaks in the manner of a teacher.

English "as" covers three of these four — "as strong as a lion", "as it's raining", "he works as a waiter" — so the mapping is largely direct. Only the exclamation is different, where English uses "how".

plutôt que and au lieu de

StructureWhat followsExample
plutôt que de /ply.to kə də/infinitivePlutôt que de partir, reste. /ply.to kə də paʁ.tiʁ ʁɛst/
plutôt que /ply.to kə/nounLe thé plutôt que le café. /lə te ply.to kə lə ka.fe/
au lieu de /o ljø də/infinitive or nounAu lieu de partir /o ljø də paʁ.tiʁ/
au lieu du café /o ljø dy ka.fe/

And plutôt on its own means "rather" in the sense of "fairly":

Il est plutôt grand. — he's rather tall

plutôt and plus tôt are two different words: plutôt = rather/instead · plus tôt = earlier.

Note that English uses "-ing" after "instead of" and "rather than" — "instead of leaving" — while French uses the infinitive: au lieu de partir.

tel — and its agreement

tel is an adjective and agrees:

Pronunciation
un pays tel que la Francemasculine singular/œ̃ pɛ.i tɛl kə la fʁɑ̃s/
une ville telle que Parisfeminine singular/yn vil tɛl kə pa.ʁi/
des pays tels que la Francemasculine plural/de pɛ.i tɛl kə la fʁɑ̃s/
des villes telles que Parisfeminine plural/de vil tɛl kə pa.ʁi/

And in the result construction: un tel bruit qu'on ne s'entend pas — see consequence.

ainsi que — and its verb

ainsi que sometimes means "and", sometimes a comparison — and the verb differs:

VerbPronunciation
Marie ainsi que Paul sont venus."and" → plural/ma.ʁi ɛ̃.si kə pɔl sɔ̃ və.ny/
Marie, ainsi que Paul, est venue.comparison (in commas) → singular/ma.ʁi ɛ̃.si kə pɔl ɛ və.ny/

English does the same with "as well as" — "Marie, as well as Paul, is coming" — and the comma test is the same test.

d'autant plus … que — strengthening an argument

It scores well in argumentative writing:

Pronunciation
C'est d'autant plus grave que c'est répété.all the more serious because it is repeated/sɛ do.tɑ̃ ply ɡʁav kə sɛ ʁe.pe.te/
Il est d'autant moins motivé qu'il est fatigué.all the less motivated because he is tired/il ɛ do.tɑ̃ mwɛ̃ mo.ti.ve kil ɛ fa.ti.ɡe/

English has the identical construction — "all the more … because" — so this one transfers directly and is worth using.

une ville tel queune ville telle quetel agrees
plus tôt que de partirplutôt que de partirTwo different words
contrairement de luicontrairement à luicontrairement takes à

Why comme si takes a past tense

because a hypothesis always steps one tense back

In French, a counterfactual hypothesis is expressed one tense further back:

RealityHypothesis
present →imperfect
past →pluperfect

The same happens in a conditional sentence:

Si j'avais de l'argent, j'achèterais. — if I had money

And comme si is simply si, so it follows the same rule.

English does exactly the same: "as if he knew", not "knows"; "if I were you", not "am". The backshift is the same, and so is the reason.

So this is one of the few French rules that requires no adjustment whatsoever. If you can produce "as if he knew" in English, you can produce comme s'il savait.

The reminder that is worth carrying: whenever you see si or comme si, tell yourself:

After a conditional si, never -rai and never the subjunctive. (The si meaning "whether" is free: Je ne sais pas s'il viendra.)
