The Result

By the third week of September, the back room of the Blue Plate had a sign on its door. It had been made by the fire inspector, laminated, and screwed into the wood with four screws, as if he expected someone to argue with it.

Under it, somebody had added a smaller handwritten sign, not laminated: THE RADIATOR DOES NOT COUNT.

The class had changed over the summer, the way a river changes without looking different. Frank now sat in the leather chair beside the chalkboard every Tuesday, with a cushion behind his back and a red pen he used only when Grace asked him to. Grace stood at the board. She had started her teacher education program at the beginning of the month and came to class on Tuesday evenings with a new kind of tiredness, the tiredness of someone who spends all day learning to do the thing she then does all evening. Mr. Pruitt appeared once or twice a month, sat on the church chair at the back, and left without speaking. The Blue Plate truck had done its first festival and had sold out of peppers in three hours.

And Ade had taken his test.
