Something in the soil
It was the last warm Saturday in October, and the community garden was full of people pulling up tomato plants and planting garlic for the winter. Dev had been told by his mother to help old Mr. Patel, and he was digging a new bed at the far end of the garden with very little enthusiasm.
His shovel hit something small and hard. He thought it was a stone. He almost threw it on the pile with the others. Then the afternoon sun caught it, and he saw a flash of yellow.
It was a ring. A plain gold band, dirty and slightly bent, but unmistakably gold. Dev rubbed it on his jeans. Inside, in tiny letters that had almost disappeared, there were two names and a date.

He ran all the way to Nora's porch without putting down the shovel.
