Last time, while the Japanese were still nightly offloading infantry troops onto Guadalcanal, they had submarines positioned to the southeast of the island. This put them in the perfect position to make contact with the American
carriers, which were busy overseeing the sending of planes, supplies, and men to Vandegrift. The Japanese combined fleet might have retreated to the north, but their underwater comrades were keeping the fight going. Their Saratoga was damaged, now heading to Pearl for repairs, but the WASP was lost, leaving the Hornets as the only operational carrier the Americans had
in the South Pacific. How would this affect the Marines on Guadalcanal? Time would tell, but how much time? But even before the WASP was lost, the Saratoga in need of repairs, held in a different form, visited the Marines of Guadalcanal. Admiral Gormley, commander of the South Pacific Fleet had come up with a plan, a plan that would make his Navy force more maneuverable,
