The idea that American schools were once fair and effective for everyone is a myth. When we look back on the history of education, much of it was flawed, not unlike how it is today, though in different aspects. While some students thrived, many others were denied access to quality education and were subject to discrimination.

Well, the education system catered primarily to white boys and men. Anyone outside of that often faced struggles when getting basic education, let alone higher education. The Plessy v. Ferguson case in 1896 allowed for segregation in schools, among other things. And most colleges barred racial minorities and women from enrolling.

While the Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 ruled segregation to be unconstitutional, many states resisted integration. Women faced discrimination as well and were put into courses that reinforced traditional gender roles. Students with disabilities were also largely ignored, as public schools didn't have to accommodate them until the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975. These groups were left largely uneducated due to the lack of resources and opportunities provided to them.
