Ben Ratliff, a music critic and avid runner, always ran in silence. Then he discovered how music opened up to him — while running. It changed his entire approach to criticism and listening. He calls it “running the song.” Today, for the New York City Marathon, Ben talks with our host Rachel Abrams about how his listening sharpens when he runs to music. Then, he goes through highlights from his five-hour New York City Marathon playlist, which is designed to complement a run through the five boroughs, featuring various styles of music connected to the places on the...

I'm Deborah Kamen. I'm an investigative reporter for The New York Times. One morning a few months ago I got an email from an anonymous email account, and this person said to me, hey, I have some documents that I think you want to see. And they said, I can show them to you, but I won't send them to you. It's too dangerous to send them.
They weren't willing to do it. So I got on a plane that afternoon and I met them in person and I photographed the documents and they proved something that we'd suspected, and now we had a chance to verify it. And we were able to tell a story that moved our reporting forward in a really significant way.
If we tell you a source was anonymous, they're not anonymous to me. I verify their identity, and I'm going to ensure that when we take the information and we share it with our readers, we do it in a way that is responsible, concerned about their safety, and also most of all focus on making sure we are moving the story forward.
