238: Merneptah Seizes Canaan (feat. A Tribe Called Israel)
Merneptah started his reign aggressively, striking a belligerent tone in his royal names and launching an expedition to Canaan in the first few years. In the process, his troops captured Ashkelon, Gezer, and Yenoam, and dealt with a tribe called "Israel." Simultaneously, Merneptah achieved a great diplomatic coup when we brought Ugarit back into the Egyptian sphere. Music by Keith Zizza & Luke Chaos. Eu em chetep, come in peace. Welcome back to the History of Egypt podcast, episode 238, Monaptar seizes Canaan. In 1225 BCE, around November, Egypt's Valley of the Kings bustled with activity. Porters and priests gathered up their tools, while labourers shoveled basket loads of sand and rubble into a pit. The funeral of Ramesses II was ending,
and they were burying his tomb. Nearby, a chariot stood waiting, perhaps fitted with a parasol umbrella. In the cart stood a man clad in the finest linen robes, and a crown glittering with gold. He was tall for the error, about 1.7 metres, or 5 foot 6. He was balding, and possibly quite slender. The man's name was Mer-ni-Petar, beloved of Betar, the new king of Egypt.
Merneptar was the thirteenth son of Rameses II, the eldest survivor of the great pharaoh's brood. He had come to prominence about twelve years earlier. For over a decade, Merneptar had served as a top-ranking army commander, a representative of the king, and a leader of political offices. Now, at last, he was pharaoh.
