Friday, four o'clock
At four o'clock on Friday, October 15, Yuna had exactly one plan for the evening, and she had made it three weeks earlier, in a notebook with a picture of a cat on the cover.
5:30 — leave work. 6:00 — pick up the boys. 6:30 — dinner (husband cooks; he promised). 7:30 — bath, books, bed. 8:30 — review Task 5 and Task 7 notes, one hour, NO MORE. 9:30 — shower, prepare ID, set two alarms. 10:00 — sleep.
Under it, in capital letters: DO NOT STUDY AFTER 9:30. GRACE SAYS THE BRAIN NEEDS SLEEP MORE THAN VOCABULARY.
Her test was at nine o'clock the next morning, at the test centre on the south side. She had paid three hundred dollars for it. She had studied at five in the morning, every morning, for five months, while the twins slept. Her permanent residence application depended on it.
At four o'clock, her manager, Mr. Lindqvist, stopped at her desk.
