In 1909, the territorial legislature passed a bill that aimed to take care of those who had made Arizona what it was. In brief, this bill called for the creation of the House for Aged and Infirm Arizona Pioneers, which was to be paid for by the state and to welcome anyone who was quote-unquote of
good character, had been active in the development of Arizona, who had lived in the territory for 25 years or more, who were now more than 60 years old, and who could not provide for themselves. This house and its mission would open its doors in 1911.
Over the years, notable residents have included five Harvey girls, Opal Tenney Allen, known as the mother of Yavapai College, Arizona State Senator Nathan Boyd-Tenny, Mary Kay Cummings, better known to us as Big Nose Kate and Doc Holliday's on and off lover, and our old and dear friend Charlotte Hall.
