Sometimes I think that the study of history should be called the study of unintended consequences. There are some famous examples that I use to illustrate this point, like how the extremely punitive measures imposed on Germany following the First World War was one of the major factors that caused the Second World War.
Or how prohibition in the United States in the 1920s did not put an end to the consumption of alcohol, but rather allowed organized crime to proliferate. A personal favorite is the Four Pests campaign from Maoist China, which targeted sparrows as one of the titular Four Pests because they ate grain, fruits, and seeds.
